Minecraft gets fan-made homage on DS

A new homebrew DS application delivers a passable Minecraft experience to your handheld device.

Minecraft has captured a lot of attention for Markus "Notch" Persson and his company Mojang, but your only chance to craft your mines on the go is on the Xperia Play -- at least, until Mojang finishes the Android and iOS versions. But a fan homage is offering one more platform, with the public release of a DS homebrew version.

The game is, appropriately enough, called DScraft (via Tiny Cartridge). While previous versions were for closed beta testers, the latest public update opens up the game to anyone willing to give it a go. The game still lacks enemy mobs, but managed to work in some of the other Minecraft features like an inventory and cave generation.

DScraft's creator is careful to note that it isn't associated with Mojang or Minecraft, but it should hold over eager pocket-builders until the promised Android and iOS versions hit later this year. That version may not be as feature-rich as the original Minecraft, as Persson has noted that it will only include features that "make sense" for touch-screen devices.
