Weekend Confirmed 74 - NHL 12, Toy Soldiers: Cold War, El Shaddai

By Garnett Lee, Aug 19, 2011 11:00am PDT

The power trio of Xav, Jeff, and Garnett come together for a midsummer's night podcast. Picking up on the excitement Shane left last week, El Shaddai gets a closer look after having played it--and fares well for the most part. Other games in Whatcha Been Playin? include NHL 12, Madden, Portal 2 co-op, and Toy Soldiers: Cold War. For the Warning, we talk about whether MMO design needs to better emphasize group play, and the recent assertion that few people finish games. Some of that discussion spills over to the news segment, which starts off with Mark Cerny's prediction that isolated single-player games will be gone in three years. Finishing Moves tops it all off.

  • After listening to the discussion about how many people finish games. I decided to see how many games I've actually finished. I love video games, I always want to play the new and innovating game that has released. I don't buy games just to say that I have them. So out of the 48 PS3 games I own I have a completed 32 of those for a 66% completion rating. On my 360 of the 29 games I own I've completed 13 of those for a 44% completion rating. Some of the game I own are Guitar Hero, Rock Band, and Buzz Quiz. Can you really complete these games? There's a few reasons why I haven't finished all my games. Some are just aren't very good games that I picked up at discounted prices just to see what they're like. For example Mercenaries 2 or Wet. Other games I just got burned out on like Crysis 2 and Killzone 3 not that these are bad games. I'm just suffering from shooter fatigue. On my DS I've only finished 1 out of the 8 games I own. On my PSP, I haven't finished any of the 4 games I own. This is mostly because I only play my handhelds when I travel. I used to play them on my breaks at work until my 45 minute break was cut to 25 minutes. I do love to play The World Ends With You on the DS.
I guess I don't have many time restraints, I'm 26, I do work full time but I am single. The thing that sort of suck is that I'm going to be starting school this fall right before all the games I've been waiting for come out. For me finishing a game depends on how interesting the game is, where it's the story that draws me in like Red Dead Redemption did. It could also be a game play mechanic I've put in 45+ hours into Beat Hazard, which is a very simple game, which I bought after Garnett recommended for Cannata afford a new game segment. By the way I miss Cannata afford a new game. The games I don't finish just didn't click with me.

    • Let me play the other side of the coin. As a PC gamer I have finished 100% of the games that I have bought. That isn't a personal pride thing, just a measure of how important each purchase is. I don't buy a game until I get at least a month of reviews from real players. I just finished Portal 2 about a week ago, and while I very much enjoyed it, the price/time on it just makes me upset at it.

I can't afford to buy a $20 game that I don't play much less a $60 game. Every game needs to be worth it's relative price, I can't even imagine buying a game and not finishing it.
