Xbox Live marketing manager for EMEA Robin Burrowes has noted that "up to 35 million people globally" in 35 countries are now Xbox Live members. Membership for the service has been growing steadily, with five million new users having been added since last January. He attributes part of this year's growth spurt to extending the service's reach to nine new countries--Brazil, Chile, Colombia, the Czech Republic, Greece, Hungary, Poland, Russia, and South Africa--at the end of 2010.
Burrowes told Joystiq that Xbox Live has actually generated "more revenue from the transaction space than the subscription space," which basically means that the revenue generated from digital sales--of games, music, and movies--pull in more money than Xbox Live subscriptions.
Thirty-five million users is an impressive number, to be sure. That said, Burrowes wasn't able to provide a clear breakdown of how the 35 million person userbase compares in terms of subscribers versus non-subscribers.
