Just in case you didn't know what the combat of Mass Effect 3 looked like, EA and BioWare have released a curiously-titled new trailer for Gamescom. The "Combat Reveal" video shows how you'll control Commander Shepard and use squad tactics to defeat the larger, more aggressive enemies of the trilogy's end.

Oh, and there's grenades.

Why is Liara the first to 'die' in this video? She's not that stupid...

It's confusing that she or any playable character would die in this video. I know it's just a demo, but with all the voice and camera cuts, it looked like a real event... where Liara apparently... dies?

        I dunno, it's weird.

At 1:17 the mecha grabs and crushes her.

I think you can bring her back by using Unity, though.

You seriously think that looked like a story event?

          LOL.

IF it was, it better be along the "Viconia becomes a vampire but you can bring her back" lines.

(No, wiseass, I'm not on about Liara becoming undead, but if you don't get my drift, you're too stupid to consider responding to. This is aimed at future-wannabe wiseasses only)

I dunno, the animations still seems really stiff. After seeing BF3 it looks... old school.

I remember the animations being better in the second one (but my memory sucks). They did seem a bit strange/ stiff here. But then, if you look at any Bioware game, the animations are all very unnatural. Especially after seeing how smooth the animations from Skyrim can be. Maybe Bioware is still working on the animations? It's a long way from release yet.

Not that this will deter me from buying this on the day of release, it's just a casual observation.

Bioware's animations since KOTOR have always been stiff and awkward

Yeah, early on when he gives them a move command and they all run around as if they have stiff backs. Looks kinda hilarious.

I love Mass Effect, but I really hope they have a larger RPG role to combat the shooter heavy mechanics.

I am still a little sad this series turned out to be a 3rd person shooter with RPG elements instead of an RPG with third person shooting mechanics...

Those squad tactics are quite varied. I saw shooting, shooting, a grenade, and more shooting.

        You must have missed the:
        - melee
        - Cryo blast followed by shockwave
        - Overload followed by grenade
        - etc. etc.

I was expecting more from a UI perspective maybe. Pretty much everything but tossing a grenade you can do in number 2. Of course the combos don't necessarily do more damage.

I hope there are more than 2 different weapons this time around.

Oh yay, I can choose between the beginner level assault rifle or the upgraded assault rifle! Not sure how I can handle that much variety, they better tone it down a bit for ME3.

The first game was awesome and the whiners ruined it.

They cut it down a bit too much I agree but the first one was dumb with a billion different mods and oh have an inventory that can hold a 140 things? 140 wtf is this Twitter? Guns in the first one just became what has the bigger numbers and throw some bs mods that didn't really help anyways. It was complexity for no payoff.

I loved being able to pick and choose between power/speed and different ammo/modification combinations.

I haven't played ME2 since it was first released but I remember being seriously annoyed that I couldn't configure my loadout during a mission. WTF they didn't have to remove that too.

you also haven't been paying attention to ME3 or you would have seen the new weapon customization system

and to be specific, you can modify accuracy, stability, damage, fire rate and magazine...ammo remains as active powers (incendiary, disrupter, etc.)...also, all classes can use all weapon types this time around, so there's more variety there (even if they "save" some of the best weapons for DLC, which admittedly sucks)

I love the ME series. I have zero issue with the combat. I'm sure it will be a bit better in ME3. But why have a trailer that makes it look like shitty amateur hour?!

think they're trying to demo the squad combat, issuing commands, interplay of powers, etc, but it all just comes off looking like a bunch of jump cuts

Yeah, without demonstrating how it's handled through the UI this just looks like some regular ME2 combat. Oh well.
