Sony replaces Resistance 3 in 3D TV bundle

The $500 PlayStation 3D TV bundle announced during Sony's E3 2011 briefing no longer comes with a copy of Resistance 3, Insomniac has confirmed.

The $500 PlayStation television bundle revealed at E3 2011 was originally intended to ship with a fresh copy of Insomniac's upcoming shooter Resistance 3; however, Sony has since changed its mind on the pack-in game.

Rather than include a copy of Resistance 3, Sony has opted to swap the upcoming game MotorStorm Apocalypse, which launched in May.

Insomniac confirmed the news on its Twitter page earlier today: "For those asking about the 3DTV bundle...Motorstorm: Apocolypse replaced Resistance 3. Sorry for any inconvenience."

Aside from the game change, the rest of the bundle remains the same. It includes a PlayStation-branded, 24" 3D monitor, a single pair of 3D glassed, and an HDMI cable. Also remaining the same? The price. According to Amazon, the bundle will still retail for $499.99.

Resistance 3 is one of Sony's most anticipated titles of the year, so the addition of the game in the hardware bundle seemed to increase the overall value of the package.

MotorStorm Apocalypse received "generally favorable reviews" according to Metacritic; however, failed to reach the top ten in sales during a slow May, according to the NPD Group.

Shacknews has contacted Sony as to why the change was made, but has yet to hear back at the time of publishing.

Sony probably realized that R3 was going to be shit, so they replaced it with a good game.

Or the 3D effect in Resistance 3 didn't turn out very well and they worried about it turning people off. Or they wanted to put a cheaper game in there instead and make more money on it. Etc.

Yeah same here. I'm planning on buying Resistance 3 no matter what but, Motorstorm Apocalypse? I figured I'd pick that game up when I could get it for around 20$ not 500$.

Well, it sucks, but honestly, I never expect bundles to have the best games included anyway. I had to swallow Kinect Adventures when I got my Kinect, I had to suffer with Spiderman 3 when I bought my PS3, etc. Generally speaking, all that pack-in software does for me is confirm that the core product that I bought actually works, and if it's actually any good or fun, that's a bonus.

Motorstorm: Apocalypse was apparently a great game that regrettably (yet understandably) delayed by the earthquake and tsunami in Japan and then quickly overshadowed by other announcements and events (e.g. the Playstation Network getting hacked, pre-pre-E3 announcements and so on). This bundle will allow that game to get into more hands and be seen by many more eyes in the way it was intended to be played, so this can only be a good thing for the Motorstorm team, provided that Sony is compensating them accordingly with residuals.

This also means that there won't be any redundancy for Resistance 3 fans. Think about it. Wouldn't you hate it if you were planning to buy the Resistance 3 Sharpshooter bundle and the new 3D TV all at the same time? Why would you want two copies of the game, especially when the TV allows two people to play together with only one copy?

So... a 34" monitor, glasses and an older game for $500. Where can I sign up?

Why it was made?! Was it a rhetorical question... money... sales
