Street Fighter vs. Mortal Kombat 'easier said than done'

Capcom Producer Yoshinori Ono discusses why a Street Fighter versus Mortal Kombat game probably wouldn't work.

One of Capcom's showcase items at the recent Evolution Champion Series 2011 (EVO) was its upcoming crossover fighter with Namco Bandai, Street Fighter X Tekken. Though the crossover seems years in the making, some gamers are eager to see Street Fighter characters face off against another group of brawlers.

Despite getting "a lot of requests" for a title that pits the Street Fighter franchise against the Mortal Kombat series, Capcom Producer Yoshinori Ono said the idea is "easier said than done."

Speaking with the PlayStation Blog at EVO 2011, Ono said that the violence of NetherRealm Studios' Mortal Kombat franchise may not mesh with Street Fighter. "Having Chun Li getting her spine ripped out, or Ryu’s head bouncing off the floor...it doesn’t necessarily match."

But Mortal Kombat has learned how to play nice in the past. When the franchise was paired with the DC Universe in 2008, the fighting game franchise's standard level of violence was tamer, resulting in a Teen rating for the final product.

Ono said that he does have a number of "dream projects," once of which being the upcoming Street Fighter X Tekken title, while another would be to get Marvel and DC Universe characters to face off for the first time in a video game. According to Ono (and probably everyone, everywhere) that game "would be pretty damned cool if we could ever pull it off."

Though he's become the new face of the Street Fighter franchise at Capcom, Ono isn't shy about giving accolades to the competition. "I’ve been playing a lot of Mortal Kombat, enjoying their Story mode. And they did such a good job with their Story mode and some of the other features that I feel like they kind of beat me in that sense," he said.

same way the current cross-over games work, each company picks their ranking and they get equal time

would kind of rather keep these two seperate. they really have no reason to have a crossover game.

That would be incredible. I'm not a MK fan but I would give up my monies for that. Seems like the KI franchise is long dead though. :\
