HBO Go coming to consoles

HBO's on-demand service, HBO Go, is heading to a video game console. Gigaom reports that Time Warner CEO Jeff Bewkes promised an expansion of HBO's "TV Everywhere" service, saying it would "soon be available not just to web browsers and mobile devices, but on connected TVs and video game consoles."

Specifics weren't detailed, but the service will likely have the same content and restrictions as its popular HBO Go app for iOS and Android.

HBO Go offers on-demand access to HBO's original programming, including True Blood and Game of Thrones, and select movies and specials. The service is provided as a free extension for paying HBO subscribers, but is only available through "participating television providers."

While console partners haven't been announced, the two likeliest candidates are Microsoft and Sony. Sony already has a working relationship with HBO, with PSP and PS3 being the first platforms to offer HBO content to download via the PlayStation Store. Microsoft, on the other hand, has expressed interest in expanding the Xbox 360's non-gaming media functionality, and promised TV partnerships at E3.
