Valve announces million dollar Dota 2 tournament

Valve has announced a million dollar tournament featuring Dota 2, which is set to take place in Cologne, Germany, during Gamescom 2011.

Valve's wallets must be bursting at the seams because the company has announced a lucrative tournament for its upcoming game Dota 2 using Gamescom 2011 as its stage.

Dubbed "The International," the Dota 2 tournament serves as both the game's public debut as well as a tournament that will see sixteen teams comprised of the "best Dota teams in the world" battle for a million dollar purse.

According to the announcement, Dota 2 is still on pace to arrive for the PC and Mac "later this year."

Sixteen teams will compete in a "group stage, double elimination playoff" throughout the show, which takes place at Gamescom 2011, in Cologne, Germany, from August 17 through August 21. For those not included in the actual playing of the game (or going to Gamescom) the entire tournament will be video broadcast worldwide in English, Chinese, Russian, and German.

Details for "The International" are available on the event's official site.

Good to see Valve has a plan for everything. How to kneecap HoN and LoL. Flood the market with awesomeness and money beyond the imagination of any DotAesq players.

Meh, even if I like Dota 2, I'll still keep playing HoN. I'm sure they'll be different enough (heroes, skills, etc.) that one won't overwhelm the other, aside from S2 being a small indie company, and Valve being Chuck Norris. I might buy Dota 2 depending on how soon the tear ducts from my wallet from the steam summer sale dry up ;)

It's the spiritual successor to Defense of the Ancients, but the game isn't referred to as such.

          MY Warcraft 3 community.

I doubt the people playing DotA would've been playing warcraft 3 multiplayer if DotA never would of been made.

So why is DOTA blamed for anything? WC3 has its comm and now DOTA carved out its own.

The tournament is in a couple weeks and it will be the first revealed footage of the game. It's a closed tournament with big name teams that have been given advance access to the game.

          They don't have DotA teams.

Valve or whoever organized the thing honestly did a pretty good job putting together the invitee list.

Only questionables are DK (in contention for top chinese team) missing (apparently they had visa trouble and couldn't make it) and the Thai team. Also, I'd rather see a BR team or Happyfeet over Mineski which is really not relevant any more.

The trouble is the community will migrate from HoN and LoL, and the Dota community is a bunch of elitist wankers.

You can't be a bonafide "newbie" there and expect to get any advice or patience, all you'll get is flamed down and kicked. Which is sad...we were all noobs at our favourite games once, where is the love I ask you?

Well I hear HoN is like that now. So it seems it's inevitable. Yet valve mentioned making bonuses and awards for players who are helpful and are willing to teach new players, and making dicks less prominent.
