Weekend Wrap-up

by Maarten Goldstein, Jun 05, 2000 4:10am PDT

If you didn't check on the Shack during the weekend ( :( ), here's a couple of things that happened. First of all, on Friday Ritual programmer Mark Dochtermann announced that Jim Dose was moving to id, to work as a programmer on the new Doom game. Then we actually got news about a Eminem Q3 map, to promote his new album. Even includes Dr. Dre and Eminem players models. On Saturday we finally heard from Steed about the whole matter, although he didn't have a lot to say (yet). Steve also posted his thoughts on a new Doom game. And lastly, yesterday saw the release of beta 1d of Q3F.

  • Ok, I know I'm a little late here, but I just got done playing that Serious Sam demo to see what all the hoopla was about. For an unpolished 'compatibility test,' all I gotta say is Wow! 'dem Croats can code! The game chugged on my slightly below minimum system (p2-400@448, 256MB, TNT1), but it just looked so damn perty, and had this weird quality about it, that I didn't mind putting up with the texture thrashing.

My first ignorant thought was, "oh, another group of foreign techdemo coders have decided to make a crappy game eh?" That first impression quickly faded when I gave it a chance though. Decent textures (which are colorful for a change!), level design, models, weapons, animation, "story", game interface, and a great eyecandy engine, though I could do without the lens flares. Heh, I noticed bullets even left marks on curved surfaces (*cough*) on the test map with that classic techdemo morphblob floating midair.

There's a definate idsoftware influence there too. Two of the monsters (the flying heads, and the charging bull thing), and definately one of the monster moan sounds, reminded me a lot of DooM for some reason. Makes you wonder what The Carmack thinks about these guys (other than that he already knows about all the tech being used, but had limits with Q3.) I even wonder if Carmack is going to bother with indoor/outdoor/terrain engine features when Doom(3) is mostly confined indoors anyway.

I must buy this game... right after I upgrade my machine to meet the *minimum* requirments that is. Too bad Serious Sam (which doesn't seem that scalable on the lower end) will be out before I upgrade this fall though. :)
