Mega Man Legends 3 titles canceled

Another high-profile Mega Man title has been canceled this year, this time with Capcom announcing it has put the brakes on its Mega Man Legends 3 project and all related content.

"Please just wait a little longer," Capcom producer Tetsuya Kitabayashi asked fans in May when he revealed the upcoming Mega Man Legends 3: Prototype Version was delayed. Today, Capcom revealed that "a little longer" means indefinitely, as both Mega Man Legends 3 and its downloadable Prototype prequel have been canceled.

"We must regrettably announce the discontinuation of this project," a post on the Capcom-Unity blog announced. "We can only express our deepest apologies to all of you who have lent us your unending support."

According to the announcement post, Capcom felt that "the Mega Man Legends 3 Project" did not meet the "required criteria" from different sectors in the company which decide whether a game will go into full production. Since the primary game has been canceled, Capcom is also scrapping plans for the downloadable prequel MML3: Prototype Version and the MML3 Developer Room, though the North American Dev Room forums will remain open.

In the 'Frequently Asked Questions' section of the announcement, Capcom is quick to note that it still holds the Mega Man franchise dear, despite canceling two projects that piqued the interest of core gamers in the franchise in less than a year. Mega Man Universe, a game that was meant to celebrate the franchise's longstanding history, was canceled in March.

Capcom is also adamant that the decision to cancel both projects has "nothing" to do with the departure of Mega Man creator Keiji Inafune, who left the company in October 2010, after 23 years of service.

I think Mega Man is losing relevance, it's probably time to to make him more approachable and relatable.

Might as well just throw this 3DS against the wall and shatter it into a million pieces. Just like my heart :(

Fine with me. I am a rabid fan of Mega Man X (at least from the SNES days), but without the ability to climb and slide down walls, Mega Man is just...well, meh.

Yeah, Mega Man X 1-3 are the pinnacle for me. I do LOVE the older ones (2, 4, 7 are some greats) but those original X games were, and still are some of my favorite games period.

I still boot up the old SNES and play through X1 now and then.

X3 was the best of the X series. I've actually got a PC copy somewhere. I should try and dig out that disc.

I think X2 is my favorite X. But X1 through 4 are all good. Then the series went weird, but the final one, X8, is supposedly a return to sanity.

I enjoyed a fair amount of the original MM's (2,3,5,7, and 9) and yes, X1-4 were the pinnacle IMO as well. I'll have to give 8 a shot.

Never tried 8 on the PS1, was it comparable to 7? Some of the bosses made a return in Megaman & Bass, which is one of the better Mega Man games, I think. Also, there's no way to play MM9 and 10 without a Wii, is there?

IIRC MM8 was super "kiddy" visually so it put me off in the time where I cared way too much about visuals. I doubt they fucked much with the general formula though so one of these days I'll have to give it a shot.

RIP Megaman. It was a wonderful childhood with him around. Sadly Castlevania is probably next with the last Metroidvania released in 2008 (Ecclesia) with no news at all of another.

My mistake. Castlevania is Konami, although it still seems like Konami is abandoning it lately.

Didn't Lords of Shadow just come out last October?
I mean, it's no 2D-Metroidvania style game, but it wasn't bad.

And now is the time to try to sell my 3DS. I bought the 3DS with hopes of getting the prototype at e3. I cant remember the last time I opened my 3ds for more than updating my pokedex.

Yeah I am glad I held back on buying the 3DS until prototype came out. I just wish they stuck to their original plan of seeing if they were going to green light the full version by the success of prototype.

I'm going to go kick that can into the shop for free Zenny in MML1 for old time's sake. :( And full disclosure, the Legends games were the only MM games I actually enjoyed. I never really liked the other, classic games in the series.

MML wasn't really MegaMan, not in the traditional sense anyways. It was a Mega Man themed Action RPG with a special kind of quirky humor, plenty of exploration, and big explosions. It's also the only time 3D mega man was any good.

I never played the other MML games, so I don't have any real nostalgia for the series, but it's still a goddamn shame, especially where this was looking to come out so early in the system's lifespan, it would have had an actual fighting chance.

I wonder how much was due to the 3DS underperforming rather than the games development going sideways.

games being cancelled for a brand new console?! it's not like there is going to be any competition for it on the 3ds. is it doing that badly already or what?

I don't mind MML3 so much, but it makes me fearful for a US release of new Phoenix Wright games or the upcoming Phoenix Wright vs. Professor Layton game.

They didn't release Ace Investigations 2 over here, either.
