I don't have the answer, but I did plagiarize an interesting theory from one of the old Penny Arcade Podcasts, and the conclusion they came to is that buying a piece of hardware is expensive and for a lot of people, buying all of them just isn't a viable option, so you end up investing in whichever one you choose. You end up needing to convince yourself that you've made the "right" choice.
If we take PA's theory at face value (and keep in mind it is just a theory) then the fact that Andy wants Nintendo games to go multiplatform says it all. If he doesn't buy a WiiU, he won't get to play them, no ifs ands or buts, so he's got to convince himself that it's not worth it.
I had the same snotty attitude towards the Xbox 360 until I actually got one, then it suddenly wasn't such a big deal. Likewise with the Vita. Now, personally, I'm a retrogamer at heart, so I'm not entirely lying when I say that better graphics don't necessarily sway my opinion, but at the same time, there's also truth to the argument that I've thrown my chips in with the 3DS knowing full well that I can't afford to buy both handhelds, and there is certainly some mental gymnastics involved in telling myself that it's not worthwhile. As much as I might like to believe that my preferences are based on rock solid logic, they aren't, there's no denying that.
I didn't buy a Wii because I thought it was a superior gaming platform (needless to say), I bought it, and have continued to enjoy it because it's the right fit for my personal tastes as a gamer. It's no different than picking a favourite band or TV show. It's hard to listen to people put those things down because the line between "I don't like it" and "you have bad taste" gets a little blurry, especially when the complaints themselves are incongruous with your own personal experiences.
To their credit, MHSilver and CruelLEGACEY and a few others here have done a great job of making their points while respecting the tastes of others.

Games are just games. What box you're playing them on doesn't REALLY matter a whole lot. It's just that most people can't afford them all.
