Weekend Confirmed 69 - Ms. Splosion Man, Alice Madness Returns, Magic The Gathering
by Xav de Matos, Jul 15, 2011 2:00pm PDTWith Garnett Lee on vacation it's up to Jeff and Xav to drive the bus. Helping them keep the Weekend Confirmed bus out of the ditch is Totally Rad Show co-host Dan Trachtenberg and DJ Andy Reid from 44th and Filth. The crew talks Ms. 'Splosion Man, Alice: Madness Returns, Dead Space 2, Magic: The Gathering - Duels of the Planeswalkers 2012, and more. In Listener Feedback we talk about if Nintendo has aged along with its old school fanbase and whether or not Call of Duty is the media's favorite whipping boy, among a few other topics. Then we slow things down and tackle the biggest news of the week, including discussion on EA's acquisition of PopCap.

#1 - He didn't listen during the discussion of Call of Duty. The point was trying to be made that Call of Duty probably can't sustain by catering to the small percentage of people who prestige the MP multiple times and that there has to be some barrier of entry that allows them to have an enjoyable experience. Period. End of story. Even if that solution is a "pro" tier (I think this already exists in "hardcore" mode) there should be some way for gamers with jobs and a spouse and kids to play a game with people on the same level as them without getting slaughtered.
The answer isn't to tell those gamers to suck it and get better. The answer is to create modes, matchmaking and other ways for someone to enjoy the gameplay on their level. Making the game accessible is nothing but good for the "hardcore" COD player. It means more copies sold and more money available to put into the next yearly version of that game. I don't get why he couldn't see that.
#2 - Nintendo. I agree that Nintendo isn't for many of us any longer. I think you can still have fun with Mario Galaxy, Pikmin, Fire Emblem, Kirby, etc. still, though. Andy acted as if anyone who enjoyed those games hadn't grown up yet. That's the kind of thing, frankly, that someone who hasn't grown up yet would say. It's possible to enjoy games with cartoony graphics at any age. You just may be in the mood for them less often than you would be for a shooter. Nothing wrong with that. But to completely throw away an entire company and whole genres because it isn't "hardcore" enough for you seems silly.
Pikmin is a hardcore game. Advance Wars and Fire Emblem are hardcore games. They're difficult.
Andy, pick up a used Gameboy Advance and a copy of Super Mario Bros. 3. You should still enjoy it. It's an objectively fun game that adults played when it came out. This idea that you've "moved on" smacks of typically "l33t gamer" nonsense.
Very very depressing podcast. Just when you have some hope for the future... I hope he doesn't represent very many folks his age.
