Some left Star Wars Galaxies long ago, vowing never to return. Others, however, are clinging onto their beloved MMO with an iron grip, going so far as to propose litigation to prevent its demise. Sony Online Entertainment CEO John Smedley told The Escapist why the MMO has to end--and the answer will surprise few.

"That's the problem with licenses: they end," Smedley said. When the game was first launched in 2001, the license was secured for five years, and had to be renegotiated multiple times over the years. "It was time to turn it off. We have a contractual relationship that's ending in 2012," Smedley added. Subsequently, Star Wars Galaxies ends on December 15th of this year.

"Could we have renegotiated? Maybe, but I don't think that would be the right thing for the company," Smedley says after acknowledging the BioWare-developed elephant in the room. "You look at the odds of a pretty large portion of the audience moving to [The Old Republic], which looks like a terrific game."

Before Star Wars Galaxies closes, Sony Online Entertainment plans on having a "galaxy-ending event," the details of which have yet to be disclosed.

Why the brackets around The Old Republic?

Brackets used in that fashion generally mean that the guy didn't actually say those exact words but that was what he was referring to.

So he might have said "moving to Bioware's MMO, which looks like a terrific game." or something along those lines.

If it isn't that, then I haven't a clue and don't know what the hell I'm talking about :P

lol I just re-read the tagline. I thought it said "and the answer will surprise a few", but it says "will surprise few", subtle difference but they mean imply different things! My bad.

"With a closure that may surprise few" would have been better

They should hookup the current players with free copies of the new SW MMO or something.... All that time...

Well, maybe not a free copy, but perhaps some kind of bonus item or something.

It would most likely have to come from LucasArts because EA is publishing The Old Republic, not SOE. I think it would be pretty cool of LucasArts to do something for those that invested so much time into the MMO, but I really doubt that will happen.

Yeah, a shame. A free item or something would be a nice gesture.

A nice gesture from EA? Dream on. These are they guys trying to fuck over Steam.

Lol. Nice gestures do not make $$$! (Actually they can when done right, but EA doesn't give a shit)

10 years is a pretty good run, never even tried messing with f2p. I think I spent a month straight a couple years ago just playing house =P Oh and when I saw a jedi pop up in a spaceport for the first time, with like 100 people waiting in line for a shuttle, my jaw dropped, assuming it was a similar feeling to one that speaks to or sees jesus.
