Space Invaders movie optioned

Space Invaders has been optioned for a movie, and is currently seeking a writer. If this sounds familiar, one of the producers is also behind the Asteroids film adaptation.

In the most confusing video game movie news since Asteroids, Hollywood Reporter claims that the arcade classic Space Invaders is getting the film treatment. It's been optioned by Lorenzo di Bonaventura and Gigi Pritzker. Pritzker has produced films as eclectic as Rabbit Hole and the upcoming Ender's Game, while di Bonaventura has had a hand in more mainstream hits like the Transformers and G.I. Joe movie franchises. They're currently seeking a writer.

You may have noticed that the game's plot is a bit paper thin: invaders come from space. As HR notes, this means they don't have to worry about upsetting fans by getting the mythology wrong, but it also means they're starting from scratch. (So why even bother with a license? -Ed) If you're wondering how both Asteroids and Space Invaders got picked up for movie adaptations, it's worth noting that di Bonaventura is also developing the Asteroids movie.
