Sony Online Entertainment has officially revealed the next game in the Planetside series. Originally referred to as Planetside Next, the next game in the MMOFPS franchise has been re-branded as Planetside 2. The announcement came during SOE's Fan Faire event, where the official announcement trailer for the follow-up to 2003's popular online title debuted. SOE first announced a new Planetside title was in the works in 2009. Following a number of studio closures earlier this year that led to the cancellation of The Agency, SOE confirmed that a new game in the Planetside serious was still planned for release. A FAQ on Planetside2.com reveals a few choice details for the game, including details on the game's three factions.
Terran Republic - An authoritarian government that leverages military might to maintain strict control over the colonial citizens. The Terran Republic is obsessed with the preservation of law and order and are thus seen by some to be an oppressive and dictatorial force, but many view the TR as the only hope for lasting security on Auraxis. New Conglomerate - Rebels, freedom fighters or terrorists? The New Conglomerate operates as a loosely organized band of dissidents, vehemently opposed to the stranglehold that the Terran Republic has on Auraxis. Led by an unusual quorum of outcasts, industry titans, pirates and former military leaders, the New Conglomerate is unwavering and prepared to achieve their goals by any means necessary. Vanu Sovereignty - Vanu has taught that only through technology can humanity evolve it's next state of existence. The Vanu Sovereignty is extremely advanced, employing powerful alien technology on the battlefield. Their singular purpose is to uncover the secrets hidden away in ancient artifacts scattered over the surface of Auraxis and they will annihilate anyone who interferes..
The site also confirms a beta is planned, with first invites going to Planetside players. More details, including the "online persistent" world's "business model" are expected to be announced soon. Until then, let us know what you think of the game's first trailer in the comments below.

Looks like GI Joe by the way of no one getting hit.

Still I enjoyed PS1 until the expansion.

They can most certainly copy a newer game for the sequel that comes out in 2011/2012.

looks more like what CCP originally promised of dust514. Now, I hear it will just be 32 v 32 matches. Otherwise, looks like what dust should/expected to be outside of not having the hookup to the eve servers.

Some more details were given during the PS2 presentation: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uqzK9X_WAGU&feature=player_embedded

      Some takeaways:

-Uses new engine specifically made for PS2.
-Main focus of the game is large scale, epic battles (yay!).
-Uses an offline, time-based training/certification system similar to EvE.
-Appears they are going for a more traditional class based approach (engineer, medic, etc).
-In depth certification trees that allows customization of class, vehicles, outfits, etc.

Not sure how I feel about the classes, but after hearing the creative director talk I'm pretty confident they will take the game in the right direction. Show us some more SoE!

Hopefully they don't ruin it like they did the first one when they made it a grind. I know they ended up changing a lot of that up but everyone had left by then.

Worst things that happened to Planetside were the caverns and the break up of that one continent into 4. It just ruined the flow of the game. After that, people left in droves. I hung on for a while, but the game was never the same.

Yeah, when Core Combat was released everyone was like 0_o this is stupid, then they rushed out BFR's (hay guys robots are popular let's put them in), split up Oshur (not sure what they were thinking there), and finally allowed all Chinese players to merge into US servers thus killing any enjoyability out of it.

Planetside is an MMO that is entirely dependent on a high playercount for players to have fun, I'm still shocked they haven't made it free to play, or lowered the price, or SOMETHING to increase playercount.

My outfit, the Tunnel Ratz, honestly loved the caverns and honestly I thought it was a great feature. We did some really fucked up shit there to people. What even made it better was that most people didn't want to go down there, so it was usually just a couple of squads of people which made for some almost TDM style engagements when you were fighting over a facility. We had plent of combat engineers and we got pretty good at setting up traps then getting a few guys to start running the mods up to the bases to help our empire. It's really too bad that people couldn't get into it because we really made cavern fighting our specialty.

The creative director sounds like he gets it. I really really like some of the things they're talking about.

      - A very classic gameplay feel; he mentioned implants, certs, BRs, CRs, vehicles, outfits, facilities
      - Improved customization, both at the player level and possibly the outfit level
      - The cert training time is like Eve, but has a BR requisite to it; so you actually have to level up and unlock new ranks before putting training time into certs or skills
      - Resource metagame, based on territory control and battlefield contribution; sounds interesting
      - CONTINENTS!!!! YESSSSS

Sounds like it still has a good distance to go. That teaser was fairly worthless, though. CONSIDER ME PUMPED!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I enjoyed PS1 (and for a bit, the CC expansion), and it was probably one of the first MMO's that a large majority of my friends picked up and played together. The game allowed all of us to specifically play the role we wanted, and while it can be argued that the faction weapons and such were unbalanced, no one ever seemed to feel like they were missing out on the overall experience of the game. Unfortunately, back then we were all still moving from place to place all the time, and once I moved into an apartment that had horrible net access, I stopped playing and never went back. Yay for 2011 and better access! I would definitely give this sequel a try.

That's exactly how my outfit was and still is. The majority of us met online but all hung out did stuff in real life. We've still kept in touch and played other games together in these 8+ years since and we're all reforming for Planetside 2.

I loved the first one when it came out and i cant wait for this one. This was an addicting MMO for me. It was also the first MMO I ever played. It sounds like they are going to do more with objectives which sounds like it will make it more interesting.
