Arkane Studios was working on a new game when it was acquired by Bethesda parent company ZeniMax last August, and now we finally know a little about it. The maker of Arx Fatalis and Dark Messiah of Might and Magic has been busy working on Dishonored. Very few details are offered, with Bethesda simply describing it as "an all-new first-person action game." However, Game Informer magazine, which features Dishonored as its August cover game, elaborates a little, describing it more excitingly as a "first-person stealth/action adventure." Deus Ex lead designer Harvey Smith is creative director on Dishonored with Arx Fatalis lead designer Raphael Colantonio. Arkane has also drafted the artistic eye behind Half-Life 2's stunning dystopian City 17, Viktor Antonov. Here's how Game Informer describes Dishonored, which sounds a wee bit fantastic:
Dishonored is the antithesis of a edge-of-your-seat roller-coaster ride. It's a game about assassination where you don't have to kill anyone. It's a game about infiltration where you can set up traps and slaughter the entire garrison of an aristocrat's mansion rather than sneak in. It's a game about brutal violence where you can slip in and out of a fortified barracks with nobody ever knowing you were there. It's a game about morality and player choice where the world you create is based on your actions, not navigating conversation trees.
Dishonored is scheduled for release on PC, Xbox 360, and PlayStation 3 in 2012. The Game Informer issue hits the stands on Monday.

Featuring Harvey "Super-Fucking-Subversive" Smith, the man who arguably ruined Deus Ex with Invisible War, and then developed Blacksite: Area 51 and said he "would give it an 80".

Also featuring Viktor Antonov, that artist wot made all those gas masky thugs and hard angular cars in Half-Life 2.

Hopefully they can leave the past in the past, and keep their uncheckable pride checked.

yeah, not to mention throwing everyone under the bus when Area 51 started getting bad reviews as well...

I like how they gloss over DEIW and 51 by just saying 'the lead designer on Deus Ex' Hopefully he'll be able to redeem himself and is able to walk his talk. Two high profile strikes on your record is usually a career killer..

Area 51 was a surprisingly fun game. The sequel was a buggy mess but the worst thing about the first one was David Duchovney's wodden V.O.

That is not a career killer. You can always find some other sucker to give you money to make something new it seems.

That screenshot screams the busted head of a Combine solider and skeleton Striders in the background.

Not just those two bits. Have a look at that grey/blue structure to the left of the image. Typical HL2 "combine" like structure. Not really surprising considering its "Viktor Antonov" signature style!

Really loved his work on HL2 especially his use of grey/blue hues, organic/techno design and sharp edged architecture.

The fact that hes working on this game, more than anything else, is what has me interested.

Here's hoping they release an art book on similar lines to "HL2-Raising the Bar". I would pay $50 for the book alone....

It was put on hold a couple of years ago for money reasons. Hopefully it will eventually come out since they now have ZeniMax cash flow.

Purely because Arkane is doing this I'm excited. DMM&M has the best first person melee combat to date in any game hands down.

definitely cool to hear more about this project. I remember reading when ZeniMax bought Arkane last year. I thought, "now, Arkane won't make another first-person viewed epic RPG because Bethesda is doing that." But I did have hopes that Arkane would implement the combat system from Dark Messiah into Skyrim (which it looks like bethesda did!).

Neato, I like stealth games and interesting first person shooters. Dark Messiah was also good.

Not without a few issues, but still incredibly fun. I really need to re play it some day.

Oh boy this looks almost exactly like HL2s world... not just the vibe but the mask looks combine, the vehicle looks like the combine vehicle, its got striders walking around, sort of a European looking city, weird tall dark metal alien things.....

I mean really....? It looks cool but it looks like it could be the next Half-Life.
