Wii U supports 3D TVs, but not a focus

Nintendo's new console will indeed support 3D televisions, company president Satoru Iwata has revealed, but it's "not the area we are focusing on."

Nintendo's new console the Wii U will indeed support 3D if you have an appropriately fancy television, company president Satoru Iwata has told Mercury News (via CVG). However, as most people don't own a 3D TV, and many cannot comprehend why you would want one, Nintendo's not pouring too many resources into it.

"If you are going to connect Wii U with a home TV capable of displaying 3-D images, technologically, yes, it is going to be possible, but that's not the area we are focusing on," Iwata explained.

"When it comes to 3-D, we already have the 3DS, and each owner of the Nintendo 3DS is capable of viewing 3-D images. However, when it comes to the home console, it depends upon the availability of 3-D TV sets at home, which, unfortunately, is not expanding enough. And rather than pouring a lot of energy into that kind of area, with the Wii U we'd like to focus more on each Wii U owner being able to have an equal opportunity to enjoy it."

The Wii U is slated to launch in 2012, likely to cost no less than $250. While all our hands-on time with the new platform so far has been playing demos and ports, it's shaping up to have a respectable lineup of "hardcore" games too.

As an owner of a 3D TV and a PS3 I don't get what the hype is about. I didn't get the TV because of the 3D, but while it is a cool novelty, I don't see how it enhances the gameplay or makes it more immersive in anyway so that is fine with me.

wait, why would you buy a 3D TV if not for the 3D?

Getting harder to find a mid/high end new model without 3d as a checkbox feature.

That's because this "feature" only costs maybe $30 in hardware to add to any TV. Worthwhile 3D content for this gimped implementation on the other hand, is more difficult. Getting me to care, more difficult still.

BORING GEGTIK: RTFA, you hack. The "lack of focus" means 3D is not a strategic/corporate focus for nintendo, not a blurry TV. Try to pay more attention in home-room next week.

Could have been interesting if the controller had the same 3D capabilities as the 3DS. At that point, Nintendo could have pushed the consumer into wanting a 3D Tv just to extend the experience. Fail.
