Final Fantasy 3DS rhythm game "Theatrhythm" announced

Square Enix has announced Theatrhythm Final Fantasy, a rhythm spin-off for the 3DS starring alums from the popular Final Fantasy series.

Square Enix is offering its own spin on the rhythm genre, by merging it with Final Fantasy properties. Shonen Jump (via Siliconera) reports that Theatrhythm Final Fantasy lets you explore dungeons and towns and fight monsters, but you'll be doing all that by tapping the stylus to the beat. The game is coming to the Nintendo 3DS in Japan, but no release information for the US has been revealed.

As a Final Fantasy spin-off, it looks to bank on the series' long history. A screenshot has already shown off Cloud, Lightning, an Onion Knight, and the Warrior of Light. This is similar to the Dissidia fighting series, which has also sold characters as downloadable content.

As for that insane title, we may see it change when and if the game comes stateside. Then again, the last Square spin-off was Dissidia 012: Duodecim, so "Theatrhythm" could be part of some internal contest to come up with the strangest name.

Square, you're like, 5 years too late to hop on that bandwagon.

I really think that Square has just lost it. Whatever it was they once had... it's slowly fading away. They are Activisioning the Final Fantasy name by pumping out too many random titles and side stories and even the main bread and butter Final Fantasy games seem to be going down hill. I don't know.. the name just doesn't hold the same weight it used to with me.

Pretty much, yeah. SNES-> PS1 were their glory days, then they started to slide downhill in the PS2 era. Outside of a few gems they published on portable systems (where the platforms' power was equivalent to SNES & PS1s, natch ) who knows wtf they're even doing anymore.

At least they published Just Cause 2 and the upcoming Deus Ex though!

I want to blame Enix but I haven't seen anything that even resembles Enix from the 90's

Western developers don't seem to be stopped by this. Oblivion is 5 years old and has more content than FF13.

Most of it is randomly generated crap though (and we won't count mods as a part of this discussion because they're not really applicable to consoles). I agree that SE needs to start heading away from maximizing graphic fidelity and back into heavy story and quest line development.

Even though they prioritized graphics over content in FF13, the graphics didn't turn out to be very spectacular.

Yup, it takes too much money and too much time for too little benefit to keep doing that. Kinda makes me wish FFVII hadn't been so successful, but I digress.

they've BEEN activisioning the final fantasy franchise since the SNES, what with Crystal Chronicles and the Chocobo games.

I've been playing the hell out of the FF4 Complete Collection, but I agree that the current installments of the franchise haven't interested me in the least. :(

I wish the complete collection was on the PS3 because I play it by hooking my PSP up to my TV most of the time. :(

At any rate, just see if you can pick up a cheap used PSP somewhere.
