Media Molecule 'stepping away' from LittleBigPlanet
by Andrew Yoon, Jul 01, 2011 4:45pm PDTDeveloper Media Molecule is ready to move beyond the franchise that made it famous. Speaking at Game Lab, Media Molecule's Siobhan Ready told the audience: "we’re stepping away from LittleBigPlanet to focus on some new ideas." (via Edge)
This development should come as unsurprising to anyone that's experimented with the robust creation engine of LittleBigPlanet 2. Whereas its predecessor allowed gamers to make new levels, Media Molecule's last effort offered full game creation. One would assume it would be difficult to truly iterate from there.
"Please be reassured that we will always be involved with LBP, at least a bit," the studio later tweeted. "And there's lots more fun yet to come!" In addition to upcoming PlayStation Move support for LBP2, there will be a steady stream of DLC to come, of which Sony has relegated much of the work to other studios. The upcoming LittleBigPlanet for PlayStation Vita, for example, is being developed by new UK studio Double Eleven. Swedish-based Tasier is also working on future DLC for LBP 2, having already "contributed hundreds of costumes, objects and decorations" to the original game.
With Media Molecule now one of Sony's first-party studios, it's likely that whatever new endeavor the company works on will be met with all the resources it needs. Given the creativity behind both of the LittleBigPlanet games, it's only natural to get excited about what's next for this talented team.
