Weekend Confirmed 67 - Ocarina 3DS, Dungeon Siege III, indie games
by Garnett Lee, Jul 01, 2011 12:15pm PDTSummer has arrived and Weekend Confirmed is ready to take it on with "Indie" Jeff Mattas joining Jeff and Garnett along with special guest Billy Berghammer. They start the show in Whatcha Been Playin? with a quick second look Shadows of the Damned, a first take on Dungeon Siege III, and Billy's playthrough of Ocarina of Time on the 3DS. Jeff brings a smorgasbord of indie games including Frozen Synapse, Jamestown, and Atom Zombie Smasher. The group moves on to discuss whether "community" in games can evolve beyond badges and stat keeping. And in the news the talk turns to the landmark Supreme Court ruling and World of Warcraft going free-to-play--or has it--before wrapping things up with Finishing Moves.

It's not their job to determine the rights and wrongs of social interaction in the online space, just as it's not the NBA's job to determine the rights and wrongs of interactions on basket-ball courts across the world. They do what they need to do to make their game better, and they let social norms and societal laws cover the rest.
Online gaming culture will start to shift when there are real consequences for breaking the kind of norms we expect in offline life. Whether it's being ostracized for overt bigotry or rudeness, or more severe punishments for breaking bigger laws.
Xbox Live has ac omplaint system in place, but it's clearly not enough. People are either too lazy to use it (because they figure 'I'm never going to see that asshole again anyway') and the people on the other end either have too many to parse through or just don't put a priority on it.
Getting your Xbox Live account banned also isn't the biggest punishment in the world, because you can just create a new one. But... it COULD be a big deal in the future, if digital distribution continues to grow. Imagine losing your whole game collection because you were kicked off Xbox Live for being an asshole... people might start thinking twice about it if they were forced to buy $60 games all over again when their account is shut down.
