Zelda: Skyward Sword story 'like a school drama'

Surprisingly little has been revealed about The Legend of Zelda: Skyward Sword's story. However, that's changing thanks to a very revealing interview in the latest issue of Famitsu (via 1UP). Long-time series producer Eiji Aonuma discussed how the games breaks from series convention and how it ties into previous games in the series. Obviously, some may consider these points spoilers, so you may want to skip the rest of this article if you don't want to get story details.

In Skyward Sword, Zelda will simply be a childhood friend of Link's. "She's not a princess this time," Aonuma emphasizes. So, how do Zelda and Link know each other? Well, apparently they go to the same school. "Link, Zelda and their other friends all go to the same boarding school, and you've got teachers and a principal as well. It's a bit of a different setting from previous Zelda [games]."

While Skyward Sword dramatically changes the relationship between Zelda and Link, it will still connect to other games in the franchise. "This game talks about the birth of the Master Sword, and it touches on why Ganondorf showed up," Aonuma teases. It's not common for a Zelda game to be blatantly linked to other games in the series, but Skyward Sword seems to have a very strong connection to the recently re-released Ocarina of Time.

According to Aonuma, development on Skyward Sword has been complete, with fine-tuning and localization being conducted in the remaining months before its release. Although Nintendo has yet to set a date, Aonuma is hopeful it will be a simultaneous global release.
