EA Sports MMA sequel uncertain

EA Sports was aiming to make a sequel to its stab at MMA, but the UFC's acquisition of Strikeforce has made the company rethink their plans. Now a sequel is uncertain.

EA Sports' attempt to take a piece of THQ's UFC pie seems to have entered development limbo. Kotaku reports that in light of UFC's acquisition of the fight series Strikeforce, EA Sports head Andrew Wilson isn't being forthcoming about the possibility of a sequel, but isn't claiming they're tapping out either.

"A world where we're not involved in fighting is a world I'd rather not think about," he said. "That said, what goes on in the sport, and what's gone on between the UFC and Strikeforce, certainly has an impact on what we can do in the space."

"I am, other than [EA Sports MMA executive producer] Dale Jackson, probably the biggest MMA fan here," said Wilson. "I used to watch the fights on pirate VHS tapes in black-and-white. I trained in jiu-jitsu with the Gracie family. I'm a huge fan of the sport. So it's not a 'no,' but it's also not a 'yes.' I would love for there to be one because I'm a diehard fan of the sport. We have to figure out how to make that happen."

Despite slow sales, producer Jeff Ecker has said an EA Sports MMA 2 will "definitely" happen. But that was before UFC picked up Strikeforce, which seems to have thrown a wrench in the operation.

They should go international, and also try to bring in recognized names that are no longer active. Its not like UFC is the be all and end all of MMA, but they are the dominant force in North American mma. I personally wish THQ didnt have the license, but whatever.
