Gears of War 3 will reward series devotees with some nostalgia-themed unlocks that pay homage to previous games in the series. Executive producer Rod Fergusson detailed MTV Multiplayer some of the old-school unlocks we can expect from the upcoming release.

"It's mostly around weapon skins in terms of tying into historical stuff," he said. "Two of the weapon skins are based on historical weapon skins, so if you want the Gold Lancer and the Gold Hammerburst in 'Gears 3,' you get them by owning the Gold Hammerburst and Gold Lancer in 'Gears 2,' so those skins transfer over."

The unlocks will be based on Achievements, since Fergusson says that's the easiest way to track those who have played the previous games. "That's what I've been trying to tell people about the level 100 thing," he said. "No, it's not about getting level 100 [in Gears of War 2 multiplayer], it's about Veteran Gear. Get that achievement and that'll get you something. I don't care if you're level 100, you have to get the Veteran Gear achievement." That achievement is rewarded for hitting level 100 and winning on each of the four Snowblind DLC maps.

The unlocks won't give players any gameplay benefits in multiplayer, so you don't have to worry about those who have scored special skins gaining an unfair advantage. Then again, players that reached level 100 in the previous game already have an inherent advantage.

Ok, so let's have some discussion! Do you guys think this is a nice nod to people who have played the earlier games in a significant capacity, or a semi-dickish way for developers to get people to grind through achievements?

Personally, I think it's best if the content is cosmetic or neat little side bonuses, like Crysis 2's in-game soundtrack feature and art unlocks. Not cool if it's guns, multiplayer modes, or other stuff really close to the core game

I think if they throw some bones to the people who got the usual unavoidable achievements, level finishing and what not, then it's all good. but if it's catering exclusively to the obsessive basement dwellers, then that's not so cool

Seems like this is all just cosmetic guns skins so I am fine with it. Won't make me go back and get a bunch of stupid MP achievements just for them.
