Rumor: New Rainbow Six to introduce morality system

According to a new report, the next Rainbow Six will be "far more story-driven" than previous games in the series, and will focus heavily on a morality system.

Kotaku has supposedly seen Ubisoft's next Rainbow Six game, offering two screenshots and a description to boot. Apparently, the new Rainbow Six will be "far more story-driven" than previous games in the series, and will focus heavily on a morality system. In the new game, a domestic terrorist group targets New York City, and it's up to players to make "in-the-moment decisions." In the demoed sequence, a hostage is taken captive with explosives strapped to his chest. The HUD will highlight body parts on enemies, showing how you can avoid (or execute) lethal shots. In addition, the HUD will point out possible casualties, should the bomb go off (like a nearby bus, filled with nearly a hundred people). You can choose to kill the innocent hostage, or risk the lives of everyone else.

Rainbow Six

Players will assume momentary control of other characters to maximize the dramatic impact of your decisions. You will be able to "play" as the hostage before the mission: you will be forced to hold the trigger button to prevent the explosive vest from detonating. If in your mission, you kill the hostage, you'll see the events play back from his perspective as an emotional punishment, of sorts. Each level will have multiple endings, and the flow of the game is supposed to "drastically change" based on your decisions. As a result, should the game continue progressing in this way, it will be impossible to see everything the game has to offer without multiple playthroughs. Oddly, as exciting as the premise sounds, Ubisoft has, apparently, not fully committed to the idea of focusing on this new morality gimmick. Obviously, it's a very different direction for the franchise--one that will take expert execution to properly pull off.

Stop naming them Ghost Recon and Rainbow Six, they lost that aspect a long time ago. Just because you still call them ghosts and rainbow doesn't mean a thing to me. Think of a new name for them. Please...

Which is why I stated to remove the Ghost Recon and Rainbow Six names. They aren't good, the only connection they have with GR and R6 is the team being called "Rainbow" and "Ghosts". They could easily rename them. It's not like the fans of these bad games won't buy them regardless if they don't have those 2 names on them.

You can't have the history of those two games, although they ruined GR after the first one. That was the real start of PC games being brought to console. When Ubi bought Red Storm from Clancy is when it all went bad. Last game I enjoyed was Raven Shield, and even that was pushing it.

RvS and its expansions/sequels were excellent. I played that for years and spent just as much time in the RvS community before finally moving on. Thinking of its co-op Terrorist Hunt mode on custom maps at the highest difficulty still brings back fond memories!

Yeah they really were. But I think I was still mad about Ghost Recon. :P I hold a grudge. But in the random department, http://www.moddb.com/games/rogue-reborn, I'm not sure if he is still working on it and not updating or what not. But I hope so. :P

Terrorist Hunt (4p) and full campaign coop (2p) were both awesome in the R6 Vegas games.

I'm guessing you never played the earlier Rainbow games? Both Vegas games were actually pretty good in their own right, but the gameplay bore little resemblance to the original Rainbow Six. Rainbow isn't supposed to be a spray and pray cover shooter.

I've extensively played every R6 game, both sp and mp, since the original's first release.

GR2 and the DXIW were the left-right knockout to the platform.

The morality system as described is incredibly lame.

      - Multiple endings that include those caused by poor decisions (i.e. the ones they don't want you to make) is stupid because then you'd have to play the game all wrong to get all the endings
      - No one cares about the hostages because the mission always ends when you kill a hostage. Not just that but there's never any good backstory that would motivate players to really care about them

The game still seems early in development so who knows what they do. I think a better solution would be to create an enticing story that would make the player feel like they're part of the world and make the hostages people they would care about (i.e. the beginning of the game could involve you interacting with the hostages or maybe it can be your family or friends). Create a system where your successes and achievements are tracked. Better performance can increase your role in future missions. For example, as you prove yourself as a R6 member, you gain more responsibilities from following orders to giving orders to actual mission planning.

I still hope they keep some form of coop in.
