Well we did this for Daikatana and it went over well so I figure we'll do it again for the DOOM 3 announcement. I went through the 1,000+ comments and tried to dig up some of the more interesting responses to the announcement. I've broken it up into 3 categories since those were the 3 major issues at hand. Here you guys go:

- On DOOM 3: BountyKiller , dra. , Lex Lethal , Eurhetemec , Gareth Bryne , mC , Nadiar , phinn , el-kaboom , Skid , yes4me - Suggestions: |hawKeye| , Anon@xtalwind , dshowcase , dra. , Anon@lvcm Boogieman , Dopeman , madgrad , skitzo - On Steed: Nadiar , Lex Lethal , Goatse.cx , Anon@compaq , RA]Mission , r0xNadZ
Oh yeah, and you guys might be interested in former id Software developer Dave Taylor's take on things.

  • So, what i got from the latest John Carmack .plan update is that Steed was fired because was all for next Doom thing (with John Carmack together), but because Kevin and Adrian were against it, they settled down the disagreement by firing Steed and going with John Carmack for the new Doom game.

Still, i'm pretty excited about what id will do. Quake 2 was one of the greatest sp game for it time, imo. Now they have Graeme, the best technology on the market, John Carmack, millions of fans (who in any way will do the same what fans of Command & Conquer did when Tiberian Sun came out) and all time in world (3 years at least, if the technology ("engine") is going to be brand new) to create the game of my dream and return me to world where I was terrified by the sound of the approaching Cyberdemon more then in any other game.

    all, of course, is imho.

  • The crazy part is, if I were Paul Steed, I'd rather id give me the option of quitting rather than being fired]d. Somehow, id simply firing him, and saying 'he had it coming for some time now' seems like poor employee management, and a shock-tactic. Shock-tactics demoralize the team, and make management look stupid. Your people are your greatest asset. Kenneth Scott and Paul Steed, and John Romero are good examples of what not to do, even if there are differences.

Newsflash to amature managers: Give your people a chance to correct their behavior before you bring down the hammer. And if the person is borderline, show them the documentation that will prevent them from getting unemployment or otherwise seeking relief for being terminated, and give them a chance to quit with honor. Nothing ruins a career and a drive to learn from mistakes like being fired. Managers have an obligation to look out for their people, even if they don't fit in. If they are fired, you the manager failed somewhere in the training process. Firing someone is a statement by management that a person is unsalvagable or unneeded, and every attempt to bring them into the fold, or realize their worth, has been attempted. I see managers every day make the same mistakes, wasting valuable talent and time.

    Thanks!

  • don't mind too much if not that much is changed. fuck all this debate about having to reinvent the game etc, the game engine is cool is great as it is .
It's like i love the king of fighters series, and i know each opne is just a variation of the last one but i don't care, i want more of the same when the same is good, and i fear radical changes being made to a great formula (eg i dread the day king of fighters goes 3d).People who don't like the game will say "oh youre getting ripped off , shelling out for more of the same", but i'm fucking aware of that, i'm not expecting anything totally revolutionary beacause i don't particularily want anything totally revolutionary from it

We must not forget that we're talking about a wishlist for doom, not a wishlist for a random fps, so the changes we want and the innovative ideas we have must be relavent to doom. eg adding weapons to a fighting game is a good idea but would not be relevant to a new version of , say, street fighter 2

  • I posted this post in the wrong topic (i've edited it a bit since)
    Heres my wishlist/shitlist for doom3:

No orchestral music, I hate that in films as it spoon feeds the atmosphere to you (THIS IS A MAJOR SCENE: BE EXCITED), the intro music in doom was what got me in it right from the 3rd seccond. very catchy, very fast paced, and creepy when needed yet although cheesy gave it that hardcore feel.

No npc's, i would hate to play doom with the fear that i may be on the brink of dying and an noc comes to save me. I want that feeling of i am alone, i don't know where, i don't know why and no one is here to help me.

No hardcore puzzles, this has to be a pure action game, where all your worries revolve around defeating the enemy, though colour keycards are great, but i don't see them as uzzles.

Fairly stupid enemies: a lot more scary knowing enemies are going to flock on to you no matter what the situation, none of this "running away when out gunned" BS.However the enemies must chase you when you run away, frantically and hopefully some will run faster than you.

Loads of enemies at once: you undestand why

as for dm, i don't mind too much, just super fast, and i completely agree about what one of you guys said about physics (no air control, super fast etc etc)

blood trails is a cool idea also, it could also mean you could use blood as way markers in some massive levers (how about even being able to cut yourself with a knife to leave trails, but at the expense of your health

when you approach a level with a boss, i want you to feel his presence right from the start,so youre asking yourself wtf i'm i coming up to , eg, have enemies scramming in terror from a specific location, seeing there limbs scattered around the level, possibly as a path to the boss.

finally about the atmosphere please don't spoon feed it to us by using slow motion, orchestral music cinematic camera panning etc, it will just give somew kind of stephen spielberg touch. Keeping the game hardcore would also be a nice thank you to those of us who've been playing id games from early on.
The people who are most excited about this will be us (ex) doom players so PLEASE make us the target market and not the mass public.

    Thanks

  • Without looking it up (and I'm sure you will just so you can say "I can do it, so there") name me someone else in the industry that is a modeler/animator regardless of whether or not you like their work.

Cause you see, I have this theory that Steed is so well known by his rock star personality and the fact that he worked at the most well known company in this bizz. That makes him the best? This point has been raised before and you all deny that's the reason. He makes tutorials based off his own technique that seem to demonstrate the "proper" way to model and everyone eats it like gospel. "He's from id, it must be the way to do it."

You say his models are the best, eh? Professional opinion, they are not the best. He has a lot of wasted polys in his models that simply aren't needed and become a waste of memory. Because there are areas where polys collapse due to poor construction makes me question the decisions he makes with his models. I'm not saying they're bad but I'm saying that he is simply adequate for the job. And where do people get off saying he is the best animator in the industry? There's hardly enough animation in Quake games to formulate such a strong statement. And besides, QuakeIII used motion capture (albeit, done by the great master himself) Oooo, what awesome talent. He's so great, he's better than... than... than... whoever it was who did that stuff for Unreal or Half-life. Who are they? Look it up.

So call me an ignorant ass, the way I see it it's the other way around. I'm just nauseated by all these opinions stated as if they're fact and you obviously don't know your shit if you think otherwise. You like his models, that's fine, I just don't think that they're the greatest work that anyone including himself can do. It's all opinion anyway and I felt that there needed to be some unpopular views expressed.

  • I think the most shocking fact in this story is that John Carmack doesn't run id.And he's outranked by a couple of texture artists?
    "LOL" and "ROFL"
The engine IS the product id sells. And if Mr. Carmack decides to point this out to them by writing the next engine to sell by himself, what would they do?
And about Doom3.... I was just saying to a friend how cool quake1 monsters would look under the q3 engine.Surreal. Horrific.
Maybe I'll actually pick up Doom2 to see what the fuss is about.
Maybe Carmack and Romero will get togeather and the world will tremble :)

  • As if anyone's really reading this, one of those posts gave me an idea for a suggestion.

    Senses.

I'm sick and tired of being able to zoom in on a little group of 3 or so enemies from long range, kill one of them and have the other two not react AT ALL! *cough*SiN*cough* If there's a bunhc of monsters together, and one of them gets gibbed, I want the others to go nuts looking for my ass! And I want them to hear too. And I don't mean that if I step up behind them and fire a shotgun at the ceiling they turn around, that should be a given. I mean, humans have crappy hearing, probably worse than whatever monsters we'd be up against, so if I'm close enough to hear *them*, they should be able to hear *me*. Maybe they don't pick up on footsteps, but if I'm jumpin' all over and grunting like a foo, they'd best come after me. And if I fire my weapon, or kick over a barrel or something, there AIN'T NO WAY it should get ignored.

Shit, even in Thief it wasn't very good. There could be two guards, and you kill one with an arrow, and the other gets pissed and starts looking for you. But you've got a good hiding place, maybe in the water, maybe on high ground, but he's not going to find you. If you wait long enough, he'll give up and go back to his post. Puh-leeez!! Your buddy is lying there on the ground with an arrow in his neck bleeding all over your shoes, and you're just gonna chill and mind your post?! You want blood! At least call for help or something...

    just $.02

  • i am really disappointed by paul steed being fired at id. no i don't know the inner workings, but i honestly haven't ever been offended by anything that he ever posted in any plan file or article, and i have read them all.

what i saw was someone who was thrilled as hell to be working at id. he talked smack initially because he was at a company that could back it up. they were (are) the best in the business, and if many of us were working there, it would be hard not to be proud. steed just liked to tell people about it.

when it came to bashing the community, i never saw him once say anything that was levelled at the quake community as a whole. people may have interpreted what he said incorrectly, but i don't hold him responsible for that. people should take responsibility for that themselves.

he may have been a little hyped up or pissed off at times, but frankly i found that a refreshing change after reading so many boring .plan files and interviews and whatnot. i looked forward to seeing what he would say next. and you know what? it was all worth it when you look at the models and art he cranked out for q2/q3.

you don't have to like him, but he got the job done. the teaming of paul steed and kenneth scott will be hard to replace....if not impossible.

(nice to see that along with all those millions id picked up, maturity wasn't part of the package. here's hoping carmack wises up and gets the hell out of there...)
