PS3 hacker expecting jail time

Hacker Alexander Egorenkov, aka 'Graf Chokolo,' is likely to go to jail, after running out of money in his legal battle against Sony.

It's odd to think that the removal of the "OtherOS" feature from the PS3 may have been the start of Sony's recent trouble with hackers. Alexander Egorenkov, aka 'Graf_Chokolo,' was one of the first to distribute a security workaround for the PS3. This led Sony to file a lawsuit against Egorenkov, a legal battle he apparently can no longer afford to fight.

"Hi guys, no money left anymore," he commented on his site. "Going to jail soon probably because I cannot pay court costs."

Egorenkov's fate is undecided, but his current situation is undeniably grim. Assuming the role of a martyr, it seems he believes jail time will only strengthen his cause. "I'm ready to stand up for everything I said and go to jail for that too. It's not important to win, more important is to show them that we are ready to fight, that they cannot scare me off easily." Given his conviction, he's unlikely to settle, much like George "Geohot" Hotz did earlier this year.

This has been a tumultuous year for Sony's legal team, and with one LulzSec suspect arrested, and another three accused of disrupting the PlayStation Network, their work is far from over.

The saddest thing is he will probably serve more time in jail then someone who was sent to jail for murder.

Sad that the government sends somebody to jail for this. Good to know they are doing their jobs properly, wouldn't want to waste your time on those child molesters, rapists, drunk drivers or violent parents. No sir.

wrong. "these guys just hacked their own consoles" and then posted it on-line. that is the illegal part. If they just hacked their own console, no one would be bothering with this. Sharing copyright material in any form that you do not own the copyright too (or trademark) is illegal in most countries.

What makes this guy dumb is he seems to have known that the posting of the content was illegal before doing it. DUH.

Grow up kid, and do it fast. So with the same immature logic; because we have murderers, we shouldn't waste our time on drunk drivers because they are less dangerous or violent? Huh? Hahaha.

You own the hardware and you can do whatever you want to it. But you only have a license to the software and you can't modify it within the license agreement.
