Portal 2 sells three million

Portal 2 is quickly on its way towards matching the sales of the original game.

Valve's Gabe Newell casually mentioned sales of Portal 2 during a talk at Games for Change in New York City. Three million is the number he told the audience, as captured by Joystiq.

While Newell didn't offer any detail about retail and Steam sales, that is an incredible accomplishment given the game's April release and full retail price point. By the time of Portal 2's launch, the original game had sold four million retail copies. At this rate, it seems likely that the sequel will match the sales of the original. And with the money made from Portal 2, Valve will finally be able to complete development of Half-Life 2: Episode 3. That's how it works, right?

I wonder if they're counting the PC codes activated on Steam from PS3 copies as a separate "copy" of the game. I doubt it, but I'm curious.

Also, the four million retail copies of Portal 2 - is that for the standalone-in-a-box game or does it include Orange Box copies as well? The linked article doesn't really say.

I see no reason why they would be counting these separately. Valve, despite playing close to the vest very often, wouldn't be above spin.

Still waiting for a sale, I don't generally buy games for $50 anymore just because of my backlog.

Me too, I love Valve but there are just too many good games coming out to slap down 50-60 dollars a pop. Especially this year, my backlog just jumped over the last 3-4 months

Here's a few from the last 3-4 months for me... Bulletstorm, crysis 2, portal 2, the witcher 2, dragon age 2, fear 3, DNF (5 dollar deal) New Vegas DLC. The list keeps growing because this year is out of control

I did the same thing. I picked it up this week during Toy's R Us' 2 for $50 sale. I got Portal 2 for the PS3 and it came with a Steam code, and LA Noire for $50 total. Portal 2 has been lots of fun.

I got it for $28 using the PS3 steam activation and promptly trading in the PS3 disk.

How so? Would have waited for a sale otherwise, so it's not like they lost money.

I've seen it on sale enough soon after release that I wouldn't quite call it a full priced release.

I'm the same way usually, and I got it on sale (at Amazon, I think?) for $30.

However, after beating it, I would have been happy to pay the full $50 for it. I still say it's the best game I've ever played.

I really like Portal 2 and I especially like the new mechanisms they introduced but I feel like Valve has only scratch the surface of whats possible in a game like Portal. For example Non-Euclidean geometry would be pretty blowing. http://youtu.be/DAkKKShGluE Also portal doors: http://youtu.be/rOSThfw7DSA

Globally only 50% have finished Portal 1, so you're not even close in your statement.
