Rumor: Mass Effect 3 co-op is 'Horde' style

The latest Mass Effect 3 rumor suggests a separate "standalone" co-op mode that allows four players to play against an onslaught of enemies.

BioWare isn't talking about any possible multiplayer features for the upcoming Mass Effect 3. "We're exploring multiplayer in all of our games and all of our franchises," BioWare co-founder Ray Muzyka told Eurogamer at E3 last week, not exactly deflecting the ongoing rumor.

Eurogamer reports that sources familiar with the game's development claim that Mass Effect 3 will feature online multiplayer support, through a separate "standalone" co-op mode that allows four players to play against an onslaught of enemies. The mode is supposedly similar to Gears of War's Horde offering, and will not "compromise" the single-player campaign. Developed by BioShock Montreal, the multiplayer component could be be released as an entirely separate game, the rumor further details.

Given BioWare's desire to continue the Mass Effect franchise after the trilogy is done, we wouldn't be surprised to see a standalone multiplayer spin-off. Of course, we'll have to wait and see if this rumor plays out.

If any multiplayer were to ever be in a Mass Effect game, I'd want it to be this. Especially if the combat were more refined than ME2.

I talk with my friends all the time about how we not only enjoyed the story in ME so much, but how we wish we could play cooperatively, if only to experience the combat together.

I think that's so out-of-character for a RPG/action game that I simply can't see any reason to include it on ME3 except for the extra bullet point in the box. Considering the two-year development time, I wonder if they're not taking resources to MP from SP.

It looks like it's being done by Bioware Montreal, which isn't the same group working on the single player portion of the game.

Coop story based missions would be pretty awesome.

Instead of playing as Shepard, you could play as a customized character (i.e. human, Krogan, Turian, etc.). Then you team up with your coop buddles and play missions complete with NPCs and dialog trees. The player who chooses what to say to NPCs would be kinda random, like how it works in that Star Wars MMO (I think). The missions shouldn't be the main story but would be related to it in some way.

There could even be an xp system to unlock stuff because I like unlocking stuff. It'd probably make more sense if you were a mercenary but whatever. They should also includes hats like in TF2.

That's an interesting idea. Maybe they could make it instead like you just have one player be "Shepard" and makes all the choices and the other player would be one of the party members. Perhaps the coop partner could switch members on the fly during missions.

I would like to see a coop mode where you fight in the Rachni War, or the Krogan Rebellion, or the Turian-Human war. Where it's a story told that you fight through.

This hoard mode is worthless to the RPG and has little to do with Mass Effect. There's so much more they could explore there.

Andrew: error in the article, you say it's developed by "BioShock Montreal" instead of "BioWare Montreal".

I'd love to see co-op in Mass Effect. Even in single player. Work it like Left 4 Dead where you take control of one of the characters (Liara, Kaiden, Jack, Garrus, etc.) and work as a team. With a nice Co-op overlay similar to Portal 2 to give directions, it would be pretty cool.

Although the "romance" between you and one of the co-op players might be a little awkward.

Does that mean next year we will see posts saying Left4Dead ripped off Mass Effect 3 from the kiddos?

That actually sounds pretty cool. If it is completely separate from the single player (even if it has it's own mini story or something) that would be a pretty sweet thing. Have increasingly harder waves of enemies in mass effect, being able to use your tech and biotic powers against them ... I approve this.

Every time I hear more news about ME3 I want to kill myself.
Bioware is just taking a shit on this property.
Maybe its EA putting pressure on these guys, who knows?
Either way.....they just keep making me look for alternatives.
ME3 already looks like Gears of War 4...if I hadn't played the other 2 games I would have ZERO interest in this game and to be honest I am finding it hard to generate any at all based on what I've seen.
I was more enthusiastic when all I saw previous to all this ACTION was Shepard looking down on a burning Earth from out of space.
THAT was a classic ME image, in my mind.
Not this Omni blade, dodging bullets shit.
