Weekend Confirmed Episode 65
by Garnett Lee, Jun 17, 2011 11:00am PDTThe dust has settled on E3 2011 and we sweep up with a full slate of games we saw on this week's show. But before getting to that, Xav, Jeff, Garnett, and our good friend Andrea Rene of Clevver TV tackle Duke Nukem Forever. From there it's on to Forza 4, F1, Hitman, Torchlight 2, Sly Cooper: Thieves in Time, Ace Combat, and many more. Duke resurfaces in the news when the group discusses the fervor over the reviews and PR responses. There's the rest of the videogame news as well and we wrap it all up with Finishing Moves.

I'm a Duke fanboy and actually just finished DNF tonight. Loved the game but I don't have any delusions of grandeur that the game is a masterpiece. Its flawed to be sure in multiple aspects but I think as a Duke fan its exactly what I expected it to be.
Getting back to the reviews... I think its A-OK for a reviewer to share his experience if he had a negative one that is obviously what he is going to share. If your review is negative however like many of the Duke reviews are I think the line is when you step over the line is when you stop making comments about the merits of the game or the experience of playing it and just spew unadulterated hate at the game for no reason.
One review even went as far as saying
" It's a game with an odious personality, one that could only endear itself to the sociopathic and mentally maladjusted."
That is WAY WAY WAY over the line.

As for a 'reverse sexism', in reality it is happening since a lot of male leads (especially the 'dudebro' shooter genre) are idealized tough guys. Here's the thing; the difference with the female characterization and male characterization is that the females are often pushed in that sexual object role, while the male is often pushed as that macho man guy. With the latter, its more a fantasy thing where guys get to just blow stuff away; kinda like how some of us used to play with action figures as kids. However I don't think that there are that many women that fantasize about being a sex object.
As Redswirl quite interestingly pointed out in a separate post, we still seem to be lacking that "Ellen Ripley" or "Sarah Connor".
