3DS firmware update fixes Ridge Racer, adds auto-updates

Nintendo issued a new firmware update last night, which fixes the Ridge Racer 3D freezing bug, offers usability tweaks, and adds automatic firmware updates.

The Nintendo 3DS had a firmware update on June 6 that added the long-awaited eShop, but it had the unfortunate (and bizarre) side-effect of adding a screen freezing bug to Ridge Racer 3D. A new firmware update went live in the wee hours last night, which apparently squashes that bug, and adds a few new features.

Among other improvements, Nintendo lists "overall system stability" tweaks. It also claims we can get automatic firmware updates through a wireless connection, which will download without installing. Once the download is finished, a dialogue from the Home menu will let you install the new firmware. This was promised before the system launch, mostly as a step to combat piracy.

Oddly, the June 6 update also mentioned automatic updates. We've asked Nintendo to clarify the difference between the auto-update features in both sets of firmware.

This update was auto-updated for me.... I just had to reboot the system for it to take effect.

Yeah. Maybe the shack staff read the earlier firmware's new features, because it listed both with this update.

It prompted me for it, but had already downloaded it - just wanted confirmation to apply.

Or, I suppose, it just downloaded incredibly fast. Whichever way it took no time.

With Nintendo downloads that's NEVER the case lol. It's always much longer than it should be.

Can't say thats been my experience, really. I've downloaded every trailer and 4 games from the 3DS shop and done all the available updates, and they've all gone reasonably smooth. No real issues yet.

I'm not saying there's issues, just that it's not very fast. I have a 10Mbit connection, and I know the couple megs that all these downloads are shouldn't take as long as they do. But as Cloud8521 said, it's to ensure a proper end-result. And I'm not complaining, it's just Conan brought up the idea that the firmware update went extremely fast, when it was simply installed automatically.

No, it wasn't automatic. It definitely asked for confirmation. I had to put in the parental code first.

It did for me too. This update is pretty neat. I notice when you exit a game, the DSIware game icons don't take a while to refresh like it did before. That always bothered me.
