Voodoo4 in October?

Craig Shill sent along this link to an article on CBS Marketwatch with some pretty darn interesting news. It looks like the Voodoo4 card is "on schedule" for an October release? Pretty surprising that 3dfx has kept their mouth shut since that is just a couple of months away. Here is the quote:

3Dfx Interactive (TDSX: news, msgs) will release a new version of its Voodoo 3 graphics card on Friday, Chief Executive L. Gregory Ballard said Thursday. Voodoo products are largely used to speed up the flashy graphics in video games. The next big release for 3Dfx will be the Voodoo 4, which is "on schedule" for an October release, Ballard added. The products should help the San Jose company more than double sales this fiscal year. Analysts expect sales at 3Dfx to hit about $550 million in the current fiscal year, up from $220 million in fiscal 1999. 3Dfx is currently in its quiet period ahead of its fiscal second quarter release, but Ballard said the quarter is going "about as we expected."

  • Basically I don\'t care who makes the video card, from the specs I\'ve heard through the grapevine it looks to me like both cards will pretty much haul ass.

I have some pretty serious doubts that either card will really hit those release dates, but I do think we can count on both of them being available by around november.

which one is faster? hell if i know. NVidia is pretty famous for claiming speeds that are faster than they really have. 3dfx on the other hand generally is much more realistic. (This is just a gross generalization, there are exeptions for both)

I honestly have the feeling that the NV10 will come out first, with the Voodoo4 following within a month and being slightly faster.

Of course, 3dfx needs to spend more development time on those drivers, NVidia basically kicks 3dfx\'s ass when it comes to drivers.

Which one would I buy? Dunno, I use a TNT2 for Quake3 right now though and it\'s sweet :)

  • #9 im with yah too

but then they have to throw kick ass movies like the matrix out to fuck with your mind =)

as i have seen people sa, the damn voodoo cards have little support for anything and if 3dfx wants to make it in this bizz they better smarten the hell up. i guess that sounded like a brokedn record

any ways the more clearly and faster i can brests in a game the better
so ill get the best of that best no matter what company.

p.s. there is no way in hell ill ever get a voodoo 4 even if its faster, not because i only like invidea, but beacause the v3 looked like shit, the scan lines alone should be enough to discourage any \"hard core gamer\" .

i could go on for ever on this and i will (which i wont). =)

what do you think steve?? v4 or the nv10??

  • 1. Will it have Transform and Lighting? I have this sinking feeling that it might not, considering all the interviews and such with 3dfx reps try and downplay the importance of it? Then again, it might have it, just that 3dfx doesn\'t want to upplay something that Nvidia went out of their way to publicize.

    2. Will it have no-penalty full screen antialiasing? Likely. In the list of catagories that 3dfx listed as important, this was one of the features. Could it be that 3dfx and Nvidia are switching priorities on this generation of cards? Nvidia wants the fastest chip, while 3dfx wants the prettiest?

Which card will I go for? Whichever ends up rubbing my rhubarb the best way in the end. I don\'t care if it\'s 3dfx or Nvidia. I\'m willing to buy a voodoo2 just to play glide games, or use a glide wrapper. Whatever. What I\'m not willing to sacrifice is OpenGL driver stability. I\'m absolutely sick and tired of a miniGL. Whatever I\'m going to buy, I\'m going to buy with the intent of learning OpenGL programming.

And those are my priorites. Who the fuck cares?

  • I really do not understand people who are such die hard advocates of their chosen video chip mfg\'s. This is how I see it:

Say I decided that nv10 would be the god chip, and all those 3dfx fans were full of bullshit, and we all know that 3dfx is going to burn in hell and nv10 will be the second comming of christ. So I flame away on everyboard about how lame 3dfx is, and piss off tons of people and sound like a idiot, and be a zealot in general. So october comes around and both companies release their chips and the 3dfx one is 50$ faster and 50% cheaper.. So where does that leave me? I was totaly wrong and stupid.

That is why I don\'t think that way, and beleive that people who do should be disqualified from life. I plow through the known facts, and look at others speculations, and come up with my own, but what it comes down to is if the 3dfx chip is better then I will buy that one, and if the nVidia chip is better, then I will buy that one. I want the best, I don\'t give a shit who makes it (excluding support etc, I don\'t think I\'d buy from diamond anymore based on my own experience and that of others, but thats my choice).

A good quote to sum this up: \"A BJ IS A BJ IS A BJ\". simple as that.
