Microsoft is pushing for more core experiences on the Kinect, and they're getting a little help on that front from Blacklight: Tango Down developer Zombie Studios. Publisher 505 Games announced Blackwater, a first-person shooter based on the controversial private military contractor. The group is now called Xe Services. The game is scheduled for release this fall.

The game lets you use the regular Xbox 360 controller or Kinect. The announcement references all the regular movements and shooting mechanics in Kinect form, but we're having a hard time picturing it. Luckily the company is allowing hands-on time on the E3 show floor.

The game tells a fictional story, but Zombie consulted former Blackwater team members in designing the combat scenarios. You'll be protecting a North African town from warlords.

"The Blackwater team is comprised of an amazing group of individuals and we're proud to work with them to create a video game that showcases their talent and courage," said 505 president Ian Howe in the announcement. "Being able to get the controller out of the player's hands with Kinect and have them on the ground and immersed in the experience will give them a glimpse of what it takes to be a member of an elite fighting force."

I guess the issue is that I hate advertising through games, and advertising for the military through games even more, so advertising mercenary corporations through video games is well into "reprehensible" territory.

All mercs (and US soldiers) had it In Iraq, not just BW. And have BW killed more civvies than the regular army? I think not.

True the military has almost certainly killed more civilians than Blackwater. However, members of the military are usually in the military because they want to serve their country or as a way to a better life. Mercenaries are there because they are getting paid. Blackwater is a for profit company that makes money by killing people. I think that is a lot worse than the ideology of the military.

because they want to serve their country or as a way to a better life

through pay, benefits, and tuition assistance.

not seeing much of a difference here.

Because BW isn't responsible to anyone. They aren't bound by the Geneva Conventions. They have a record of abuse. They work for whomever pays, which means keeping despots and tyrants in power. Or even working for drug cartels. They can actively undermine the interests of the United States and generally be a pain in the ass.

I think I was trying to make a distinction between the people and the institutions. Regardless, I was oversimplifying because from what I've heard, a lot of the people on the ground that work for Blackwater are not the gung ho trained killers we think they are but are people from poor families lured to working for companies like Blackwater by promises of good pay.

The difference between those guys and soldiers is that solders are given training and are (at least ideally) held accountable for killing civilians and raping people. The people who work on the ground for Blackwater aren't. They aren't as well trained or disciplined as soldiers and if they kill civilians or rape people there is little to no repercussions either for the people involved or the company.

Also, the military is not a for-profit enterprise that will go out and work for whoever pays them (ignoring issues of corruption, politics, or wars for oil). Blackwater is out to make money and will work for practically anyone who pays them. To me that is a big difference.

I think it is a difference in kind not in degree but maybe it is just a difference of degree.

Play the CEO or mercenary hireling! Personally murder your employees involved in an investigation of your company, or shoot at people who dare drive within eyesight of your convoy! Order the relocation and renaming of your company to evade world courts or protect empty Halliburton trucks as they drive in circles endlessly for no reason! The choice is yours.
