Trials HD developer RedLynx has announced a sequel to its splendid motorbike stunt and accident simulator, headed to Xbox Live Arcade this year under the name Trials Evolution.

Evolution will introduce local and online multiplayer to the series, which sounds like a sure-fire recipe for terrible and beautiful disasters. "True" outdoor environments and "a host of additional improvements" are also promised.

"Trials Evolution is more than just a sequel to Trials HD," said Antti Ilvessuo, RedLynx creative director, in the announcement. "We listened carefully to all the feedback we received from the previous game and added it to our own vision of what the ultimate Trials game could be, coming up with a gamer's wish list of must-play features."

Trials HD recently passed the two-million sales mark on XBLA.

This game is awesome while also causing me great pain and anguish. I'm not sure it needs a sequel.. there is still plenty of pain and suffering in the first game I was never able to go to.

Trials is like Super Meat Boy in that what it really needs is an easier sequel.

I disagree - I think the difficulty curve on the games is great, and the extreme levels on both are really just fuck-you punishing.

My kids can get golds on Beginner and Easy. How much easier do you want it?

I confess to not having played through more than the demo of Trials HD, but everyone is always griping about how hard it is.

I know for a fact though that Super Meat Boy is just sadistic. It's fun when you figure things out, but even with all my platforming experience I just burned out somewhere in the Rapture.

The end of Hard and the Extreme levels are fucking TORTURE, but Beginner/Easy/Medium are a fine ramp-up. King of the Hill is where you really start to look at it and fucking HATE Finland.

SMB...I got to Hell. Now I'm sad. :(

Yeah, I'm complaining.. but in reality.. I wouldn't have it any other way. It's funny.. .you will play a level and get stuck on one section and do it a couple hundred times and still fail. Then you can pick it up again a week later and get right through it. This is one of those arcade games like Geometry Wars which I will just go back to and keep playing months and months after buying it. (Which sounds like the signs of a good game to me).

Soo... you're saying they should make a completely different game. That wouldn't be a sequel.

Making something easier means it's "completely different?" I'm not talking about changing fundamental gameplay mechanics here, just level design. Team Meat made some truly cruel design decisions, like too few "breather" stops or extending walls just far enough to wreck jumps that otherwise make sense. A little room for error would be nice!

I think the difficulty is fundamental to the gameplay and taking that away would make it completely different. Trials has copious checkpoints and you're rarely under any kind of pressure other than the clock, so you can take your time and execute your moves. It's a game where you have to be conscious of every thing you do and can't just brute force things.

In SMB though you ARE under constant pressure. In Trials you can often stop your bike before a tricky jump, relax and then roll forward when you're ready. In SMB you often have to complete a series of moves flawlessly, one after the other, in order to finish a level. Didn't hold the jump button a third of a second longer? Sorry, repeat entire minute-long level another 50 times.

That doesn't really make the case for trials needing an easier sequel though.

pack up your stuff and go home. These games obviously aren't for you. Their difficulty is what makes them so successful. They offer a challeneg consistently. It took me quite a while, but i managed to do some of the Extreme TrialsHD levels in under 10 faults.

              It was so addicitve.

Wouldn't it be nice, though, if a person with normal reflexes and a job could actually finish the game without pounding their head against their desk? Past a certain threshold it stops being fun and more like work.

i am a normal person and i work 40hrs a week. The games are hard yes, and it took me over a year of playing it (not everyday, but when the mood took me i would spend 30 mins to a couple hours replaying one level over and over until i was satisfied with the time) before i was able to tackle the extreme levels with a view to doing well and not just crossing the finish lines.

Without their difficulty, these games would not have done half as well as they did. They are easy to get you used to it and difficult to keep you playing.

If you find the hard levels are too hard for you to enjoy, don't play them. If you feel, then, that there isn't enough easy content for you to buy the game, then don't. But don't expect them to change the one thing that makes them great.

A completely core concept of SMB is the difficulty and cruelty. The best part of that game is when you defeat a dastardly level and get to watch a replay of the 50 copies of yourself dying and exploding until the one triumphant meat boy reaches the goal. If you don't get joy out of this, go play an easier platformer. Don't ask them to neuter this one that I love :(

The problem is that there aren't any platformers quite like SMB, so it's this or nothing.

it sounds like you want to play these kinds of games, you just want to be really good at them without much practice? sort of defeats the whole object of them really.

I like the SMB universe, and the idea of bite-sized levels where you just have to discover "the trick" to get through them. I don't like failing repeatedly because a level is designed to punish the slightest mistake; you can blow everything because your thumb twitched!

to be fair, i gave up on it pretty soon. I wasn't prepared to invest TrialsHD-amounts of time into it. :/

Yea I feel you there. I loved the whole atmosphere and humor of SMB... it was a really well done game on so many angles. I would totally play another Meat Boy game that wasn't even a platformer just because I love the characters and the goofy style.

Yeah I never managed the expert levels in spite of getting gold on most of hard.

I like that though - they're providing content for every level of player, even if some of that content is out of my reach.

well they had the checkpoint system for us normal mortals, but that still failed for me, I hit a obstacle that I could not pass, after 100s of trials (lol) I still could manage to get over it, and that's when I feel the game failed, there was just no way of learning what I did wrong, it was to unforgiving, maybe they should have had a slow motion mechanics or something to show how you should do or to learn the moves. I dunno, in the end it left a bad taste in my mouth. So I will not be buying a new version.

watching replays always showed me how to get over anything i had difficulty with. I felt it was cheating though and tried to do it myself atleast once.

I struggle with being able to do some of the crazier moves repeatably. It's not a matter of "rock back, accelerate, then push forward", it's "rock back 22.847%, accelerate for .1883 seconds at 45.87% throttle, then push forward .3492 seconds before landing".
