Halo 4 announced; trilogy planned

Microsoft capped off its press briefing today with the announcement of Halo 4, which was described as the start of a new trilogy.

Though we got a hint of things to come, Microsoft capped its E3 press briefing today with the announcement of Halo 4. The brief trailer showed off Master Chief picking up where he left off, being awoken by Cortana and finding himself in the wreckage of his ship. The trailer mentioned a holiday 2012 release.

Microsoft's Don Mattrick called it the start of a new trilogy for Microsoft, so there's plenty of Halo on the way. The ship looks like Forerunner technology, which could hint at a new direction for the series.

Biggest news here is that they're starting a trilogy, presumably all on the 360, in Holiday 2012. Sounds like a 360 successor isn't coming any time soon.

Although I guess it's possible Halo 6 will be on a new console like Halo 3 was.

My only reaction to this announcement:

      WTF?

Well, whatever. It was inevitable. They'll keep milking it 'til it's dry, maybe even keep on trying until there's no blood to be wrung out of its stone. Meh.

I just cannot give two shits about anything Halo-related as I find everything about it stale.

          I do mean EVERYTHING.

The gameplay, the graphics, the art style, the music, hell, even the universe itself just seems horrifically stale and bland next to every other sci-fi franchise in existence. There's just nothing in it that's even remotely compelling.

Of course, I just hate console shooters in general, so it's not like Halo really has a chance. They have their formula and it works for them, good on them... but why should I care? I have a crapton of shooters on the PC and nearly all of them are superior to Halo in every way.

I really wish they'd give it a rest and do something new for a change. It's obvious that doing a Halo sequel forces them to be extremely rigid in their changes between iterations - they're often so small that, quite frankly, a whole lot of them could be released in PATCHES. I expect a lot more than that in an honest-to-god sequel. Its single-player, the only part that would warrant a completely new release, is not even a compelling reason to splurge.

Anyways, yeah, I will now proceed to refrain from commenting on or even looking at any Halo-related articles in the future, as it is simply not relevant to my interests.

This just plain isn't true. There AREN'T a crapton of shooters superior to Halo in any way, and certainly not loads as you claim. Nearly anybody would agree that Halo has earned a spot in the {completely arbitrary, I know) top 10 fps of all time. Maybe if you were hard on it top 20.

I think top 20 is much more realistic myself, and I think only the first Halo should really get the nod because it's the only one to really bring much new to the table.

To me, Halo 1 is all about the following:

              * Good implementation of "off hand grenades" that pretty much any smart FPS designer ripped off
              * One of the earlier implementations of ragdoll physics
              * Nice outdoor environments at a time where games were mostly in corridors
              * One of the first big games to integrate pixel shaders in a way that wasn't in your face or tech demoy
              * Good music
              * Some of the only coop action you could get at the time

Having said that, there are easily 10 other fps games that blow it out of the water.

The AI in Halo doesn't get enough credit. It's really very good - in fact, better than most other FPS's made. The enemies know how to act in a coordinated, somewhat intelligent manner instead of just zerg rushing the player.

awesome vehicles w/ physics, fantastic AI, regenerating health (everyone is doing it now)... the game broke a lot of new ground when it came out

also the first FPS with great console controls, you could only carry two weapons at a time, the ability to play multi via system link, etc. I was no fan of the game when it came out but I think it deserves more credit than you're giving it :)

This trailer gave me goosebumps. It really did. For all the uncertainty around 343 taking over Halo, one thing is cetain: They have an excellent grasp on how to tap into the essence of Halo in a way that makes us Halo fans shiver with excitement. The perfect blend of 'nostalgia' with 'new and mysterious'.

Can't wait! Perhaps multiplayer won't be restrictive playlists!!! And perhaps we'll have coop matchmaking from day 1!!!

Can you tell I'm bitter from Bungie's handling of multiplayer?

Did Halo Reach ever add coop matchmaking?

Also, Halo 4 will at least continue the story instead of doing prequels or side stories. I'm much more interested in the story after Halo 3 and Master Chief. Glad to get back this aspect.

I always find it hilarious when I see "milking" comments. As is MS is the only company in the history of videogames to do a sequel to a title? Did people forget series like Final Fantasy? or MGS? or Super Mario?

You're assuming people aren't also making comments about those games and their sequelitis.

Although in Final Fantasy and Mario's cases it's kind of unfair as the games actually change considerably between iterations. Not so much for Halo...

While I firmly believe that everyone is entitled to their opinion, I don't understand why they think that anyone cares about it? All these post where the person posting hates Halo, despises Halo, or just plain doesn't like Halo aren't necessarily wrong, it's just funny that they think anyone cares that they hate halo, especially considering they are posting on a Halo-related story. Kinda lame guys!

That would be like me going to a Killzone 3 story and posting about how every game in the series has the same ashen gray/slightly brown-ish color, and how the weapons all feel the same (for example, I don't really feel this way). That would be stupid and, quite frankly, asinine. These post almost seem like the only way to justify their love of other titles, is to bash on another that is popular. I really dont get it. Oh, and by the way commanderxp90, I don't understand what exactly you are doing there with the / marks. Are you comparing all those titles at once to halo, or just each individual? Because all three would obviously be better than ONE TITLE.

To keep the record straight, I am not a halo FANBOI, just someone who enjoys a good game whereever I find it. I also hate pointless and unfair bashing of ANY video game, not just halo.
