Project Cafe's touch-screen controller confirmed by Nikkei

Project Cafe, Nintendo's upcoming successor to the Wii, will feature a touch-screen controller according to a new report from Japan.

A lot of crazy theories have been thrown around regarding Nintendo's successor to the Wii, currently dubbed "Project Cafe." Perhaps you heard of the one involving a six inch touch screen controller? A controller that also has a built-in camera? That would be crazy, right?

Well, it's true, at least according to a report featured in the Nikkei. The Japanese news source confirms the previously rumored details, such as the six inch touch screen and camera. According to a translation by Andriasang, "the controller will give tablet-like controls to games" and the controller "can also be used as a portable game machine." So, what does this mean for Nintendo's other handhelds, such as the 3DS?

The system will be released in the latter half of 2012, giving developers plenty of time to take advantage of Nintendo's unique controller, and us enough time to scratch our heads in confusion. Hopefully, all will make sense after Nintendo's E3 press conference next Tuesday.

A touchscreen interface would actually be a big improvement to clunking around a menu with a control stick. I'm sure there's some cool gameplay stuff you can do with it as well.

Agreed, but it does come in handy as an additional menu screen such as inventory. I'll be interested to see what they end up doing with it.

Can you imagine how well certain PC games would do with this? Diablo 3, for example.

I won't be surprised if this combo gets announced at E3.

If they're smart they'll be able to sell ports of tablet games too. That would be pretty great.

I would laugh if a game made you use virtual sticks instead of the analog stick that's right next to the screen.

This will be awesome for party games, multiplayer gaming in the same room. Finally two people sitting at the same console can have information that is kept secret from the other player.

So 3DS I think we'd all (even the biggest fans) admit is not gone well... Now this.

Wow, skyward sword is the only nintendo thing on my radar, and that's sad :-(

      Sounds like a bad idea...

The implementation sounds like it would play something like that Crystal Chronicles game for Game Cube. Which would be interesting for personal huds in multiplayer games...

BUT... the worst part about tablet-style games is typically the control system... Making the main controller of the system a tablet, just sounds like it'll make gameplay awkward...

      Guess we'll see.

If each controller still has two thumbsticks, a d-pad, and buttons; it'll be fine and not an issue.

Nintendo, you'll probably still do fine with your known franchises, but man, this is weak so far from all the details about this controller.

The iPad will be having graphics approaching this within the next two years and you expect this new console to last? I mean, you want to sell a console for probably $300+ (as they will not lose money) and the iPad will likely be down in that ballpark due to increased competition wtihin the next two years. Plus, Apple pushes the hardware specs of the iOS devices every year.

The iPad already has the ability to drive 1080p displays and use the iPad as the controls, but you know eventually they'll be AirPlaying those games to either AppleTV's or the oft-rumored expanded AirPlay-enabled "other devices," like HDTV's being the most commonly rumored.

And then what you got, Nintendo? A relic of a bygone era, that's what. Because an iPad--much like a PC--can do a helluva lot more than just play games. And when it approaches the quality of your specs in your console, probably within a generation or two, your Cafe is going to be closed like a Chinese cafe scheduled to be used for free speech that suddenly has the streets in front of it cleaned for days on end...

Hopefully, Nintendo will figure out the industry's moving away from specialized devices and jump on the iOS train. I look forward to Mario Galaxy 3: Luigi's Mansion 2: Peach's Been Captured going on sale for a $1 for a weekend in about five years.

In ten years, people will wonder why anyone ever bought ANY consoles. In twenty, there will be generations of people who will hear stories about consoles and go, "Grandpa, why did you buy that silly Nintendo Cafe thingamajig?"

And you'll answer, "Cuz, I thought it was neat with the controllers with the mini touch screens and the 1080p whatsit's. And hey, you know, I remember reading this post by this guy... I think it was on shacknews... who said the future'd be like this, what with all the gaming on general devices instead of specialized... I forget his name, but man was he ever right. I wish I had listened. Haha, I bet Nintendo wished they'd listened before crashing and burning with both the 3DS and the home console that came after. Else, maybe they wouldn't have had to sell themselves to Apple for $2 and a half-chewed stick of gum..."

"Well, grandpa, they say that stick of gum still had some flavor left..."

Yeah it is likely that "at some point" portables take over everything; but certainly not for the next generation.
And even after that, whatever happens controllers and buttons are not going away any soon.. Touchscreens are fun and all but not nearly as satisfying, or practical, as buttons and joysticks.
