Weekend Confirmed Episode 63
by Garnett Lee, Jun 03, 2011 11:00am PDTWith E3 next week, Xav, Jeff, and Garnett take on a deluge of big games in this week's show, none of them larger than The Witcher 2. Both Xav and Jeff have been playing it and they have much to share about their budding romance with the game. From there it's on to a massive stack of titles including Metro: Last Light, Batman: Arkham City, Saint's Row: the Third, Journey, and more. The third segment belongs to Sony's upcoming handheld--the NGP, Vita, or whatever you want to call it. Garnett got to play with several of the games and shares his experience with Uncharted: Golden Abyss, Little Deviants, and the standout of them all, Sound Shapes. Game announcements and the latest news take the final segment up to a special edition of Finishing Moves with the guys offering their E3 predictions for Sony, Nintendo, and Microsoft.

Add to that the recent PSN problems and Sony needs something big to gain some positive momentum for the holidays. If this was ever going to be the year of the PS3 that is almost certainly lost to Sony now.
Also potential positives like the NGP could be turn to negatives if Sony prices themselves out of the market (which is why I think they will not announce pricing at E3; build the buzz at E3 and, since it will release first in Japan, announce pricing at TGS).
As for games, Uncharted will be huge for Sony but Gears will be huge for Microsoft. Major third party releases like MW3, ES:V, and others will sell better on the 360 so Microsoft doesn't have to worry about a lot of exclusives this year.
Therefore Sony has something to prove this year. They need to be more positive about their own products and spend less time taking shots at the competition. While I agree with Jeff that it's nice for someone to be making the Ferrari of gaming systems, Sony appears to want to do that but have the sales figures of Chevrolet. Sony needs to decide what they want to be.
But I think the pressure is equally on Nintendo. The last year has not been kind to them and they need something to take off. They need games that will sell the 3DS and a good showing of Project Cafe. If that doesn't happen they will lose any momentum they had from Wii. I'm not sure how much of that pile o' cash is still left but their future will be dim.
As an FYI, I think last year was the pressure year for Microsoft. While a lot of core gamers were not satisfied with what they saw from Microsoft last year, Microsoft reached (no pun intended) their intended audience. The sales numbers over the last year indicate that is the case. They are solid for next year, maybe two. I think the end of life for the 360 and the next gen console cycle may be problematic for them though unless they pull off actually making the Kinect appealing to core gamers.
