Star Trek video games are boldly going where they've never gone before with a new co-op shooter starring Kirk and Spock, publisher Paramount Digital Entertainment announced today. The imaginatively-named Star Trek follows on from the recent semi-reboot movie.

The dynamic duo will be teaming up to "stop a legendary enemy race bent on conquering the galaxy," Paramount says. The game's script is penned by God of War series writer Marianne Krawcyzk "in collaboration with" the movie's writers Bob Orci and Alex Kurtzman.

Star Trek will be released for PC, Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3 in summer 2012. Development is being handled by Digital Extremes, the studio previously responsible for BioShock 2's multiplayer and currently making The Darkness II. This is about all we know for now, so you'd best try to make your enjoyment of the single screenshot last as long as possible.

"Star Trek challenges the boundaries of co-op gameplay with a galactic adventure that gamers and fans have never experienced," Paramount Digital Entertainment president Tom Lesinski said in the announcement. "Working closely with the Star Trek filmmaking team throughout development, the game is sure to deliver AAA production values, a wide variety of gameplay and all the action you would expect from the hit franchise. This will be the definitive Star Trek gaming experience."

After 25 years of disappointment, I'm not getting my hopes up of a good star trek game. I'll believe it when I see it.

I actually enjoyed Starfleet Command a lot. Helped that Patrick Stewart pitched in as Picard, but the game was solid fun for me. I'd even buy something like a revamped Armada.

I think the Star Trek franchise has seen a more consistent record of good games than Star Wars, to be quite honest. Even stuff like Birth of the Federation was solid and a lot of fun.

Bridge Commander was good, it just came at a time when space action simulator type games were really starting to lose their market. Granted, the character models were pretty lol, but the rest of the game was pretty damn solid.

Probably because every game focuses on combat, when it should focus on exploration.

Did they fix the little bug they had in the beta where you would blink and suddenly your inventory was full of tribbles? That was the best bug ever.

I think so - I don't generally keep tribbles around - pass them off to crew members.

There was also an adventure game in the first couple of seasons, Harbinger; Dominion Wars, a not very good strategy game; and a Genesis/SNES game, Crossroads of Time.
