If the supposed release of Duke Nukem Forever is all a massive prank, it certainly is a thorough one. Today has brought word that its first multiplayer downloadable content will be free to members of the First Access Club, while the launch trailer has, well, launched.

"Any First Access Club member who has registered as of today will receive the very first downloadable Duke Nukem Forever multiplayer add-on pack for free when it's released!" Gearbox explained today. There's no word on what exactly this will contain, but extra maps and character customisation options are likely candidates.

Developed by Gearbox and published by 2K, Duke Nukem launches for PC, Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3 on June 14 in North America. The European release will, unusually, come first, on June 10. A demo is due out tomorrow for First Access Club members, too.

Here's the launch trailer:

The fact that there has been nothing said of the demo in a while has me kind of worried about it's released. That being said, I really hope I'm playing it tomorrow!

I just want to say even though I have been a harsh critic of 2k, gearbox, whoever else involved over the past couple of months, I really do appreciate that they were able to bring this back from the dead and release the game. I have been eating everything Duke right up over the past few weeks, I secretly love it all.

And with that being said, the game is inevitably coming out, so my time here on the shack has come to pass. I hope dognose, and the other duke fans who've been waiting so long for this enjoy the game. thanks for all the years of stalking georgeb's posts to snatch up any sliver of news about DNF. I'm out, peace, and thanks.txt!

I'm still in a kind of state of disbelief about this game... but I'm getting increasingly more excited about it as it gets closer. It's like.. that protective brick wall I've built around my excitement for this game (the one to shield me from repeated waves of disappointment) is slowly coming down brick by brick. And now I'm finally letting myself believe. Can't wait for this one!

The righteous indignation could be completely dissipated if all they did was wait two weeks. It's too close to the release date to be worth it for pre-orders and the whole point of free DLC is to entice people who either haven't bought it yet and are on the fence to buy it

Games have a budget and timetable, set in advance, for delivering all final assets. Near the end of production, if there’s money left over & the studio feels DLC could be profitable, employees who would otherwise be laid off/placed on leave can be tasked to create DLC. With delays from console certification, release dates, etc., occasionally DLC gets completed before the title goes gold & is included on the release disk. The reason they still charge is because it's extra content that wasn’t intended to be in the game, but circumstances worked out to where they were able add it.

Nice try, but etc is short for "et cetera" which puts you at 101 words. Therefore, DLC you are wrong and is bullshit. QED.

^^^ winner. day one dlc != you were screwed out of content that would have shipped in the game. This is just internet assumption and negativity gone awry. There is a lof of down time for a lot of the team as a game goes through final cert process. Most of the content people have been off the game a while at that point and can be doing other things while a smaller team of programmers and others deal with the cert process. Lots of artists and level designers will be done with the game 3 months before ship when content gets locked. They will move to another project or DLC.

And killing the used value of the game is what? Just a nice side benefit?

Call me a cynic but all this day one DLC stuff really only became popular after retail outlets switched their focus to used game sales. I don't doubt that developers had leftover content that they didn't have time to ship the game with but this stuff is almost always linked to some online account so that you won't be able to get the full value from a used game. It's not like the developers are continuing to develop the game after it goes gold just to create good will in the community, it serves a very specific purpose.

This may be the case, but do businesses just not care that it looks as though it's the other way?

I imagine most of the negative press never really hits the masses on something like DLC, but still. You could wait a few weeks or months to release the DLC that was already done and no one would know any different. And you'd get a nice bump in publicity by releasing new content.

There's clearly more benefit to having early DLC, vs worrying about the .01% of people that think there's a sinister plot to screw them out of game content.

.01% really? I think it is a much higher percentage than that judging by the frequency that i hear (or see) this complaint.

I doubt it. There are a TON of people out there that buy games who would never even think to look at a website like shacknews, ign, etc. Let alone venture into the comment areas where all the speculation and "The Man Is Screwing You!" talk goes on.

I think there are a few examples of content originally planned for release getting pushed out to DLC. One title release in the past 2 years fell under this, and the developer eventually coyly admitted to it in an obscure newspost. I think it was some RPG.

On the other side of the coin I could argue that an actuall content was cut from the game later in development so said content could be sold off as DLC for more $$.

              • reply
                June 2, 2011 4:22 PM

As long as you realize you are wrong and that content, when cut, is almost always cut due to time and schedule and not to sell as DLC later. Bear in mind that cut content has always existed.

In fact, the Duke 3D add on , Plutonium Pak, had levels in there that we cut from Duke 3D in order to finish the game. This happens with every game, but it's not due to evil reasons like you assume.

Day one DLC whining on the internet is just silly. You think you are being ripped off and you should have gotten that content in the game release, but that's simply bot true.
