3dfx On Nvidia

Kyle from HardOCP decided to stir the poop pot a bit by forwarding an email sent out by an NVidia representative with a quick quip about the Voodoo5 delay. The NVidia rep forwarded the PR about the Voodoo5 delay and included this: "Hence our argument about shipping product versus non-shipping products. I believe we were on the shelves on April 30th?" Well, obviously 3dfx knows they goofed on the release, however Brian Burke of 3dfx sent off into this lengthy email response he forwarded.

  • even if i considered ever buying 3dfx now i won't, cause they started this whole thing and i find it disgusting

let us do the bashing of the cards we don't like, not bash the other manufacturer who came out before you with a chipset which can compete with your card while your card is not even out yet, as i see it, this is a plot to try to convince the ppl to wait for 3dfx's card, and the only way 3dfx can do this is to say things which may or may not be true, we only will know when the cards are in store, ohh i should not write rants while i'm half a sleep, but maybe somebody will understand what i'm saying here

  • Oh yea, and if you're buying a new card, I don't think you'll be as happy as you could be if you just go for raw benchmarks. Eventually performance will tabletop until some new tech rolls around. Features will become the deciding factor. Just look at the Voodoo2. Yes, it sold tons, but a lot of people were unhappy with the fact that it didn't have 2D and therefor took up an extra slot. THAT and 32-bit color along with comparable performance is what got people looking at NVidia more seriously, and then then TNT2U converted a lot of people. Look at that Radeon... sure, it's gonna perform nice in the basic stuff, like OpenGL and Direct3D. It'll put out GREAT numbers. But it's also got features going for it.

If I had the money right now, I'd be waiting for the V5-5500 to hit the stores. Proven FSAA, great performance, 16 and 32 bit 3D, reasonably low price. All I want is there.

  • I'm finally back. I had to take a trip to Michigan, tons of fun.

    Anyway-like any of you care.

3dfx needs to ship a product, and get the next (Rampage) out before Christmas. No more of this delay shit. GIgapixel tech needs to be implemented, and implemented well.

I can agree with NVIDIA being the better company. It is true that their chips are performing better, even if only slightly.

ATi has some serious potential, and I will not rule them out in this market.

Keep in mind that in the video-card market, things can turn around overnight. NVIDIA is the best now, tomorrow it could be 3dfx or ATi.

(but my 3dfx stock is not inspiring confidence at the moment)

One more thing, I don't think any of you know 3dfx's current financial status. Anyone can guess that it can't be good, seeing their latest products. But, there is more to the story, and there are some facts you aren't considering.

Even if Voodoo5 doesn't do well, 3dfx will stick around for at least two more product cycles. They are already in production. If those don't do well, then you can talk.

Im sorry if I mis-spelled anything or if my statements weren't coherent. Im half asleep right now, and my head is throbbing.
