Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy project coming from Hothead

The maker of DeathSpank and Swarm is working on a Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy project, which we can only assume is a game.

Douglas Adams' much-loved comic sci-fi series 'The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy' has gone from radio, to novel, to stage, to television, to video game, to film, over the years, and is now coming back round to, presumably, video game. Hothead Games, maker of DeathSpank and Swarm, announced today--on Towel Day--that it's making some sort of thing based upon The Guide.

Hail people of Earth! Megadodo Publications is pleased to announce that we are working with the interactive entertainment development team Hothead Games to bring The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy, the standard repository for all knowledge and wisdom, to the farthest uncharted backwaters of the unfashionable end of the Western Spiral arm of the Galaxy. This new edition of The Guide will be available not only on your planet but also on all nearby systems including Alpha Centauri.

You see? We can say it'll be a thing, definitely. A video game, most probably.

The official site helpfully notes that The Guide will be available for "all of the latest primitive digital devices." In a blog post last week, Hothead mentioned that "Our current console plans are under wraps... but we hope to share some exciting news with you soon." Perhaps a console game, then.

"We're super excited to be involved with such a legendary creation as The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy, said Hothead co-founder Joel DeYoung in today's announcement. "The quirky and hilarious universe that Douglas Adams created became an instant classic for so many. All the hoopiest froods here at Hothead jumped on the chance to work on the project."

Or maybe Hothead really is making a guide containing all the knowledge an interstellar hitchhicker could need, with the words "Don't Panic" written in large friendly letters on the cover. Only time--or, more likely, E3--will tell.

The most notable video game adaptation of The Hitchhiker's Guide was a notoriously difficult text adventure, which is available to play online, tarted up with graphics. Starship Titanic, which Adams designed, is often thought to be set in the Hitchhiker's world but, really, merely happens to have a few references and in-jokes.

Here's hoping it's as witty as, if not better-writ than Infocom's offering. Juggling an inventory of Tea and No Tea still evokes fond memories.

That was a great game. Those text adventures had a certain charm to them... it was a brief but very cool period in gaming history. I think I spent the most time with Leather Goddesses of Phobos though... my not quite yet perverted childhood mind was so intrigued. Well.. that and Zork. Lots of Zork.

The infocom game was written by Douglas Adams himself. I doubt that they can do better than the man himself.

      Why would we assume that?

I might be a Choose Your Own Adventure book.

A lego hitchhikers game would be the bomb.

Graphic / Text adventure would be excellent.

Not sure what else would work.

Anyone that missed Bureaucracy text adventure by Adams should check it out, it's a ton of fun.
