Duke Nukem Forever gone gold [updated]

Honestly, Duke Nukem Forever has gone gold. It's probably genuinely actually sort of being released, maybe, we think. Oh, how we jest!

[Update: 05:50] Publisher 2K has now sent out an official press release on the subject, as if that proves anything. However it does have a nice quote from 3D Realms veteran George Broussard, who wasn't exaggerating in saying, "Duke Nukem Forever and its journey to store shelves is legendary."

It's an epic tale of four game development studios that banded together and did the unthinkable and shipped the unshippable. When you play this game you will be reminded of that epic journey at every turn and in every small detail of the game. The character, attitude, interactivity, gameplay and political incorrectness combine to make a Duke Nukem game a unique gaming experience. In the timeless words of Duke Nukem it's finally time to 'Come Get Some'. Come be a part of gaming history.

[Original] Duke Nukem Forever has gone gold. No, seriously. Or so developer Gearbox Software says, at least. In theory, this means that Gearbox has discs containing the actual final version of the game and is sending them off to the manufacturers.

Yet you're still a little sceptical, aren't you?

The DNF demo is due to be released for First Access Club members on June 3, across all three platforms. Still, that'll only prove that the demo section exists, won't it?

The only way to be truly sure is to wait a few weeks for the full game, as Duke Nukem Forever is supposedly launching for PC, Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3 on June 14. Europe will get to find out for certain a little earlier, on June 10, but would you trust the word of a European on such an important matter? We'd happily all say we're definitely playing it for real, to yank your Yankee chain.

I'm playing Duke Nukem Forever at this very moment, in fact. Consider that a little test for you.

And really the "when it's done" mentality will still live on, just not in the hands of any developer published by a corporation. Indie games and smaller developers, basically. All those games you've never heard of until Steam puts it in a daily sale.

In my opinion - if you're on the fence about the game (as in, you would consider buying it, have the funds, etc.) you should just go ahead and buy the thing. Preorder on Steam if you're so inclined to save a few bucks.

If the game sucks or you hate it then at least you'll have something to talk about in the days/weeks following it.

Of course, there's a demo coming so you could just check that out first (although, I'm not sure when non-FAC members get it)

        You could do the following:

        1. Pre-order the game with $10 cash at a GameStop
        2. Get FAC access code
        3. Download demo
        4. If you like it, purchase the game when it's released (retail copies still work through Steam since it uses Steamworks)
        5. If you hate it, go cancel your preorder and get your $10 back (I assume this still works)

          May 24, 2011 9:18 AM

If the game was still coming out from 3D Realms it'd be a done deal for me. And that's sort of why I'm on the the fence, since the core game was still done by them and the final polishing by 2k/Gearbox. Their post-launch game support has been pretty lackluster imo (on PC at least), and it's not something I really want to continue supporting. But on the other hand.....it's the Duke!!!!!

Hypothetically speaking, I don't have a good enough hotline to Steve to get hold of him at a moment's notice and make him instantly post something I know needs to go up on Shacknews very soon. Steve probably doesn't have a fast enough route to 2K marketing and legal to get permission to do something like that, either.

Once upon a time, game marketing was even worse than it is now, and games sometimes got all the way to the supposed release dates before it was acknowledged that it was not ready and it was going to be delayed for a few months (which sometimes got repeated for a year or more). GONE GOLD was meaningful because it meant that the game really really was going to be on store shelves in a few weeks.

$50! For a game that was supposed to come out nearly a decade ago? Screw that! I was all excited to play DNF, figuring Gearbox and Co. wouldn't try to pass it off as being at the same level as current games. Then they go and act like it's just another shooter (price-wise)?

                May 24, 2011 11:43 AM

Well it has only existed since 2007 and since then Prey 2 was sold to ZeniMax and Earth No More was put on hold(although they recently applied for a new "Earth No More" trademark). AAA games often take 4 - 6 years to make in this day and age, so it is not that weird that they haven't released anything yet.

But yeah they are still around and they are still working on several projects:

"Q4) How are Radar Group's projects progressing?

In fact, a huge one was recently announced but we are not suppose to
say we're attached to it. Although, when it's released you'll see
Radar's name in the credits. Plus, we're making progress on other
                key, but unannounced projects."

Well games that are put on hold don't exactly have an excellent track record of being released, so that might well be true, but Radar Group is a continuation of the work that 3DR did with external devs and their track record in that area is significantly better than their track record with regard to DNF. It is completely unwarranted to extrapolate from DNF to any of Radar Group's projects.

          Problem is threads expire now.

I mean I guess if we all bookmarked it we could keep going but really the issue is that unlike, say, Quake 3, we no longer have a community focused and obsessed with a single game like we used to. Everybody wanted Quake 3. We have posters with over 10K posts who might not even buy DNF.

I'm not saying that this is a bad thing, I'm just saying the industry is different now.

Yeah, in many ways.. the days up to and around the release of Quake 3 were a special time. Back then there were only so many great online shooters. It seemed like the majority of the community would be focused on that one huge game... then anticipate the next one... then hop onto the next one when it came out. Now there are so many shooters coming out on multiple systems, everything is a bit more diluted.

Hey George, on Matt Chat ep #99 Scott Miller said that the PC version of the game was essentially done and GB took it, polished it, and what players will experience is "is really a 3DRealms game".

        Ref: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=n_i3-aoHnww#t=16m08s timestamp 21:08.

GB ... can u actually confirm who's funding the game after gearbox revival , ... scott miller said that T2 woudln't give you guys help , but they gave gearbox , so isn't gearbox self-funding the project or what ... because all of the marketing was done by 2K of course ... who makes those photoshops , 3DR marketing was , especially because JohnStJon wasn't involved directly IMO ... (he helped to make the 2007 trailer ... which kind of still look better than anything from 2K .. but okay this is not important for PC players, as long as the ingame model is original)

just a btw, nothing to bother at this very moment ...
