Free 360 for students who buy Windows 7 PCs

Microsoft is giving a free Xbox 360 4GB to each student who buys a Windows 7 PC worth $699 or more.

In a recent development that simultaneously facilitates and undermines educational productivity, Microsoft has announced that beginning May 22, students who purchase a Windows 7 PC of $699 or greater value will also get a free Xbox 360 4GB console.

The "limited time" offer requires that participants are current students with a valid email address with a .edu extension.

According to the announcement:

If you have a .edu email address you can purchase your new PC through one of our participating online retailers. If you don't have a .edu address or prefer to walk into a store, touch the PCs and test their features, bring your Student ID into a participating retail location. Check with your chosen retailer for additional specifics they may have in place.

The Xbox 360 4GB console currently retails for $199.99. Not a bad freebie for students who need to buy a brand new computer anyway; at least for those who can afford a $699 rig.

The offer begins this Sunday for students in the U.S., but will also be "coming soon" to students in both France and Canada. End dates for the promotion also "vary by retailer," so if you're interested (and able) to take advantage, it's best to do so earlier than later.

See if one of the retailers have custom configuration PCs that qualify?

Well if you save $200 by custom building a pc you can just turn that money saved into an xbox.

or build your own pc for $500 which will be better than a $700 shitty retail pc and use the leftover $200 for whatever you want.

This is my plan. I was already planning on buying an $800-1000 ultra slim laptop this year.

Hay! What about the UK!? I already have a 360 but I'd really be happy if some of my friends who were looking for new laptops would damn well get one too!
