Fallout: New Vegas 'Honest Hearts' DLC won't work with some saves

The latest add-on pack for Fallout: New Vegas apparently does not play nice with some save files. Bethesda says they are aware of the error and is working on a fix.

[Update] Bethesda has sent Shacknews the following response to the original story below: "The ED-E bug was in Fallout: New Vegas (not the Honest Hearts DLC) and affected a very small group of users. It was largely eliminated in the previous patch. While a few may still be encountering issues, we will be providing a way for them to manually force their companions to leave their party in the upcoming patch, thus eliminating the issue entirely."

[Original Story] It would appear that, like the original adventure, the latest DLC for Fallout: New Vegas shipped with a few bugs. According to one user on Bethesda's blog, the Honest Hearts DLC for New Vegas won't work with saved files that have fallen to any number of the bugs found in the main game's "ED-E, My Love" side quest.

Bethesda confirmed the issue in a reply to the concern [via Destructoid]. The add-on is currently available on the Xbox 360 and PC.

Bethesda promises a fix is in the works; however, there is some additional bad news, the fix won't apply to all. "If you already have a save game where the bug is occurring, the fix will not apply and you'll need to revert to an earlier save prior to ED-E leaving in order to play through Honest Hearts," Bethesda's Nick Breckon wrote.

Shacknews has contacted Bethesda for an update on a fix and whether or not the PS3 version of the add-on will be tested for this error prior to seeing release.

Fallout: New Vegas was developed by Obsidian Entertainment and launched in October 2010 for the PC, Xbox 360, and PS3.

Fuck that fucking bullshit. They have really dropped the ball repeatedly on what is, at its core, an excellent game.

This is the worst part. What IMO is a fantastic game is regarded by many as merely a buggy piece of shit. It's well-deserved of course, but I just hate to think that it might hurt the genre or the IP.

I'm not an extreme gamer but not casual either.

When I met a bug I worked around it. The Atmosphere and what the game was offering me was just too compelling to ragequit.

Jesus, isn't this like the 2nd or 3rd update/patch for this game that has had some save game incompatibility?

I didn't have any bugs that I remember during my playthrough. Overall I enjoyed Honest Hearts a lot. I think it was a little short, but I feel like it was worth $10.

I ran into a bug whereby ED-E, who had died earlier, was apparently still set as a companion, so the game wouldn't let me start the caravan quest. I had to use the console to summon ED-E, and then tell him to leave. Other than that, it has worked fine.

Seriously, I keep holding off because when I feel like I can buy it, something like this happens.

I just played through Honest Hearts today. Guess I'm lucky it worked perfectly with no problems for me.

I thought it was pretty good, the Easter eggs are nice and the main characters are interesting. Short, and too easy though -- and I play on Hardcore + Very Hard all the way. When you hit lvl 40 it's just ridiculous that all but 2 of my skills are maxed, and I have the most powerful perks for both ranged and melee.

I've heard it is better. It features the burning man. I don't have any real interest in playing anymore New Vegas.

Devs have absolutely zero excuse for not having perfect savefile management.
      None.

If I patch, it should never break my previous saves. If I get some of that addon content the devs and pubs are so hard for, it should never break my saves.

This one is inexcusable, upfront and honest or not.

          Tron 2.0
Ran into a bug near the Lightcycles. Game-stopping.

Yay, a patch to fix it!

Oh, what? The patch invalidates game saves?

Fuck you, fuck your game, fuck your mothers. >:(

yah i don't have a clue why some games a patch will break your saves... why in the hell are you storing data into a save that can be invalidated by a game patch.

My later savegames are in the 10mb+ size range. They're storing everything.

Hey, all games developers! You notice how Valve and Blizzard have tremendous early adoption/sale rates? Also notice how their games aren't crazy-ass buggy out of the box?

Oh, wait, you don't! You instead choose to design for a narrow hardware spec and put the troubleshooting on the consumer, because that's their problem. Nice!
