Report: Modern Warfare 3 first details leaked

Sources claim the next Call of Duty game is Modern Warfare 3; it will reportedly wrap up some dangling plot threads in the single-player, and add new Spec Ops modes for multiplayer.

Coming as a shock to absolutely no one, Activision's next Call of Duty title has been revealed as Modern Warfare 3. Kotaku reports that unnamed sources leaked details on the upcoming shooter, which is being made by Infinity Ward, Sledgehammer and Raven.

The single-player campaign will take place a few months after Modern Warfare 2. Characteristic to the series, it will let you take on various roles, like a Russian Federal Protective Services agent, SAS operative, tank gunner, and AC-130 gunner, alongside a cast of returning characters. It's said to span locales like Manhattan, Paris, London, and Dubai.

This story seems to be a transition point, wrapping up some dangling plot threads and character arcs from previous games while introducing new characters. "Frost" and "Sandman" are Delta Force operatives who may go on to other Modern Warfare titles. If you're in the mood for spoilers, Kotaku has also published a detailed plot as they understand it.

Detail on the multiplayer modes is scant, other than the new addition of two Spec Ops modes called "Survival" and "Mission."

We've contacted Activision and will update as more details become available.

This game is going to be more of the same; overpriced DLC, a bunch of gamers complaining about the game in virtually every aspect, a $60 price tag for at least the next 18 months, Steamworks, etc. I'd be shocked if the game play is any different. Needless to say, it will sell like a hot piece of meat.

Looks like another reskined CoD game. Time for another record sale!

The bigger and more spectacular CoD gets the worse it gets. They try to cram so much 'epic' in that it just ends up being an on-rails jam dispensing infinite spawning enemy dull fest.

Honestly, no one cares that much about the single player methinks. Details on what they're changing in MP (if anything) is what's gonna give people the massive hard-on that CoD seems to give them.

Do you speak for the millions of players who bought this game? If they could sell it on Multi Player alone don't you think they would have.

In terms of hours spent playing the game, you're right. But for massive sales of the game my hunch is the single player is vital.

Oh definitely, that's why I think they would never sell an MP only game. But what keeps it thriving and ginormous and this "on to the next one" mentality is, in my opinion, MP.

I'm actually a bit surprised they haven't done this yet. They could probably get away with a much smaller budget and still charge full price.

He might as well speak for them. As brain-dead as the masses that buy it are, I would imagine their collective ability to produce something resembling intelligible speech has been impaired.

Multiplayer is what made this series a juggernaut. Its active and long lived, DLC buying player base is why they can overcharge for said DLC and keep the game at $40 to $50 6+ months post release. The people that buy it for the single player may be in the millions but they are a non factor. Multiplayer is where this franchise's power comes from. CoD dethroned Halo and since its multiplatform, CoD showed other studios how good the gravy train is when you are king of the multiplayer shooter genre (at least on consoles). The problem is there's really only room for 3-5 mega hit multiplayer games at any one time. Brian mentioned this rule/theory on weekend confirmed more than once. Multiplayer gamers tend to stick to a few titles and only move en masse to a new game if it offers something unique and different. CoD 4 struck the right balance between competitive gameplay while still allowing room for casuals. Plus Halo was getting old and WWII era was worn out. Contemporary era shooter = the new WWII era.

Maybe it's a good thing they are coming out with more of these games, because eventually more and more game developers will say, "lets not go the Modern Warfare route cause that's been done about, how many games is it up to Frank? 20? Wow, sad"

I think Modern Warfare is officially more milked than Guitar Hero and Rock Band combined.

The problem with Guitar Hero was they released 3 a year. At least with this we are only getting 1 a year.

This makes me think back to the days of Call of Duty 2 and 3. I had passed on 2 because I had already bought CoD1 and CoD:UO, and played through the single-player campaigns, but didn't have enough motivation to go for multiplayer. 3 was a console-only title by Treyarch that used a completely different engine, and by that time, World War II shooters had been pounded into the ground (I still remember Penny-Arcade's "award" for Call of Duty as "Best World War II Game, Goddamnit Now Can We Please Have Another Genre?").

I'm at that point with the Modern Warfare franchise. CoD4 was good, and truly revolutionary; it was the game that made Counter-Strike look like a quaint toy. World at War was definitely a step down, but worth running through a few times. I skipped MW2 because of "no dedicated servers". Black Ops was a nice redemption from Treyarch for the misses they had with World at War, but still had some scripting blemishes in single-player, and I hear that PC multiplayer still has network performance problems.

So now we have MW3 finishing off a story that numerous people say has jumped the shark, no details on what the PC multiplayer solution will be (other than rumors that Raven is doing the multiplayer development), and then the "freemium" Asian market Call of Duty game, plus the new Beachhead studio, and rumors of a subscription Call of Duty title. I'm not in it for the story anymore, Infinity Ward has already demonstrated what they think of the PC multiplayer community, and Treyarch was very very late in their PC community outreach efforts (mod tools hinted at back in September 2010, but still not delivered; two $15 map packs released). Even if it still breaks sales records, the franchise seems hollow.

About time we get some modern warfare 3 news. I hope they come out with the largest map pack for launch WITHOUT DLC. I refused to buy anymore DLC packs. People are already starting to look the other direction with FPS so they need to do something big, and more maps on launch day for free would be perfect. I saw a ton of screenshots of the game at http://mwarfare3.com and new modern warfare 3 information. I'm hoping they release a video at E3 so we can see the game in action. Now I'm finally getting excited about MW3!!! Oh yeah I hope the map levels are much deeper, it seems like they have been slacking with the maps as they have become pretty basic. Needs to be more exploring and better fight areas.

I must be an idiot, but I enjoy all the over the top stuff going on in these games. The stories are retarded and the jelly on the screen is funny, and multiplayer killstreaks drive me insane, but the games are fun to play and the controls feel fantastic, even on a controller. I grew up playing Ice Climbers with my brother, so maybe I am easily pleased!
