Nintendo 3DS eShop system update due in June
by Alice O'Connor, May 12, 2011 6:00am PDTBack in January, Nintendo revealed that the 3DS 'eShop' digital store and Internet browser wouldn't be included when the fancy new handheld was released in March, instead launching in a system update. At the time, Nintendo expected to launch it "late May" but the company revealed yesterday that it'll in fact arrive in June.
The system update will be available to download over wifi in North America on the evening of June 6, Pacific time. It's also expected to add an option to transfer DSiWare games from a Nintendo DSi to a 3DS. Nintendo didn't give a full list of all the update will bring, only saying that it'll add "new features and enhancements" and highlighting the eStore and browser.
The eShop will sell downloadable games, like the similar services on Wii and DSi. However, Nintendo has said it's learnt from the mistakes of those dreadful stores and that the eShop will offer a "drastically redesigned" shopping experience. The eShop will also have a Virtual Console of its own, selling vintage Gameboy, Gameboy Colour, TurboGrafx-16 and Game Gear games.
While Opera has been Nintendo's browser of choice for several years, the 3DS browser is reportedly NetFront--as used by the PlayStation 3 and PSP.
