PSN restoration 'at least a few more days' away

Sony has issued an update on the PlayStation Network restoration, saying it will take "at least a few more days."

As Tom Petty would say, the waiting is the hardest part. Despite assurances that Sony was entering the final stages of network testing last week, PlayStation Network restoration will still take "at least a few more days" according to the latest post on the PlayStation Blog.

I know you all want to know exactly when the services will be restored. At this time, I can’t give you an exact date, as it will likely be at least a few more days. We’re terribly sorry for the inconvenience and appreciate your patience as we work through this process.

The "final stages" point made us think that restoration was imminent, and when Sony opted not to flip the switch over the weekend we presumed it was to make sure they were fully staffed when it went back online. Now the network outage is verging on the edge of three weeks. An erroneous report recently stated that Sony had set a new deadline for May 31, but it was apparently a misunderstanding.

Meanwhile, the fallout from this continues to mount. On top of upset fans, lawsuits, subpoenas, and Congressional inquiries, developers are starting to bristle as well. Capcom recently spoke frankly about money loss from the extended downtime. During last night's Activision earnings call, the company referenced "loss of high-margin revenue" and expressed hope that PSN will be restored before the planned launch of the Black Ops map pack.

Whenever the network is restored, you can look forward to some free swag. Though Sony Computer Entertainment America (SCEA) hasn't announced its make-good plans, Sony Europe detailed their own. It will include two downloadable PlayStation 3 games out of a choice of five, and two PSP games out of four.

Awesome. Too bad I bought Portal 2 on 360 instead because of this. But at least now I can get my L.A. Noire pre-order bonuses right away.

The whole problem that many might not understand about this PSN breach is how complex it probably was... Everyone spreading rumors about their servers being out of date is just bullshit. Taking their time and fixing everything right is their best bet atm, if they could put a notepad on their servers they could plant a hidden file they could access later somewhere there also...

Sony Tech 1: "Sir! I believe there has been an attack on our network! We must shut it all down as we cannot tell how complicated this attack was and how far reaching it was."
Sony Tech Boss: "WHAAAA? THAT"S IMPOSSIBLE! RIDGE RACER! RIDGER RACER! RIIIIIDDDDGE RAAAAAAACEEERRRRR!!!"
Sony Tech 1: "I know, Sir! It's a very frightening situation! The attack seems to be severe, calculated, highly complex, and carried out by professional hackers!"
Sony Tech Boss: "How can you tell, have they left a calling card?"
Sony Tech 1: "Yes! They left this notepad on the server in the server room and here is a hidden file folder we found in the cornet that is empty, but they might access it later!"
Sony Tech Boss: "Ok. This is serious. We're going to need some PR help. Call in.... TotalRecall."

I'm not sure how pointing out someone is an "X nuthugger" is equivalent to saying "X sucks and should be comically misspelled with a dollar sign. because they suck"

In all likely hood it probably wasn't that complex at all. Microsoft would endure more attacks than Sony ever has, and I dare say they've learnt some harsh lessons. Sony now has to go through that, and so they should if they want to be a big player in the online space.
