Next Call of Duty detailed in 'coming weeks'
by Xav de Matos, May 09, 2011 5:00pm PDTThough Call of Duty: Black Ops is now claiming the title of "best-selling game of all time" in the U.S. and Europe, Activision Blizzard claims the franchises upcoming "initiatives" will be the most successful in the franchise's history.
During its Q1 2011 investor call, Activision Blizzard revealed that details for the next installment in the Call of Duty franchise will be revealed in the "coming weeks," dousing the fires of a reported Official PlayStation Magazine UK reveal in gasoline. As expected, the game's release was pegged for "this fall."
Though Activision Blizzard wouldn't go into detail regarding the upcoming title, the company said the new game will feature an "unprecedented online experience." When pressed for further details, it was confirmed that the upcoming title will sport features from the Beachhead-developed "digital platform" Activision Blizzard announced during its Q4 2010 investor call.
Beachhead's initiative is to offer an unknown level of "in-game integration" on consoles, "invest" into the community, and help to further monetize the Call of Duty brand.
Activision Blizzard boss Bobby Kotick was quick to point out that the publisher is not "taking anything away from the current game experience." Reiterating previous promises that the company "never, ever" charge gamers to play online. Instead, Beachhead's platform is expected to add other features.
Reports in January pointed to the next installment of the Call of Duty franchise being developed by multiple teams, including the slimmed down ranks at Infinity Ward. Developer Sledgehammer Games is also working on a game in the Call of Duty franchise, which is described as a "first-person shooter, action title."
We expect to be bombarded with details leading into E3 2011 and at the actual event itself.
