Saints Row 3 getting pre-launch character creator

Saints Row: The Third will let you try out character creation with the "Initiation Station," to launch on PC, PlayStation 3, and Xbox 360 sometime before the third game in the series.

Saints Row 3 -- excuse me, Saints Row: The Third -- will let you toy with its character creator before the game hits this holiday season. Publisher THQ and developer Volition announced the Saints Row Initiation Station, to be released on the PC, PlayStation 3, and Xbox 360.

With the Initiation Station, you can create your best fashion disaster and share it with friends. Plus, you can download other peoples' characters and tweak them, or collaborate on a co-op set. THQ was about as vague as vague can be on a release window for the Initiation Station, so just expect it sometime before Saints Row hits.

If you pre-order Red Faction: Armageddon, you'll get early access to the character creator before it hits the rest of the unwashed masses. Current pre-orders count as well, so if you happen to be a fan of ridiculous outfits and wanton property damage: score.

If SR3 is anywhere near as good as SR2, I can easily see another 50 hours of my life going into this.

I missed both Saints Row 1 & 2, but heard good things about them. What sets this apart as not just a GTA clone? Story? Graphics? Gameplay?

It's significantly more juvenile than GTA. Which makes it fun. It's like all the jokes of GTA IV that you might hear on the radio stations come to life instead of just being a discussion topic.

Exactly- this is a game that KNOWS its a video game and just wants you to have a lot of fun.

Plus it has about 9000% the customization options of GTA IV, which was a bit of a let down with the number of stores and outfits available.

Plus the fact that you can permanently store vehicles, and customize those too. And among the storable vehicles are the fucking aircraft, along awesome stuff like monster trucks, bulldozers, and supercars.

SR2 has full campaign co-op. It's like playing GTA IV in co-op. It's unbelievably successful in that regard and a ton of fun.

SR2 was the BEST GAME EVER. Too bad I was playing on the PC.

GTAIV was more about graphics whereas Saints Row was more about having fun. I'll take fun over graphics any day. Like playing Gunz: The Duel, TF2, Borderlands, Quake 2, and then some. I COULD care less if Borderlands had a unique art style, but it was a BADASS game. SR2's graphics weren't all that nice (but the textures were pretty good) compared to GTAIV but who needs a sandbox with 100% realistic dolls?

THIS. SR2 co-op is unbelievably fun. I played through the game three times with three different people, and I think put 80+ hours into it because of that.

I hope the third one is 4 players. It would be pretty much the greatest thing ever made.

SR2 is also the only 360 game I own two copies of because of this. Even my fucking WIFE liked it, and she's usually just Mrs. Sims and Facebook games.

I loved the hilarious and over-the-top side missions. they're really wacky. I thought the side missions and/or the things you had to do to achieve unlockables in the GTA games to be really stale and repetitive.

In SR2, the side missions were really fun.

SR is more like the old GTAs in that it doesn't try to be serious. It's a game about running over hookers & taking their money that knows it's a game about running over hookers & taking their money.

Fuck yes. Brink and this. Custom characters rock. BF3 needs something like this. I hate being stuck with a set of templates to choose from.
