TF2 'Replay Update' brings editing tools, video contest
by Alice O'Connor, May 06, 2011 7:05am PDTSwish replay editing tools arrive in Team Fortress 2 with yesterday's Replay Update, making it a snap to edit and upload videos of game footage. As if that weren't exciting enough, Valve has also released an excellent new TF2 comic and launched The Saxxy Awards to recognise players who make the best use of the new tools.
On Replay-enabled servers, players will be able to record and download replays able to be shot and edited from any angle or perspective. You can then edit your carnage into a masterwork, which can be rendered out to .mov, uploaded in-game to Youtube, and shared through Steam. Here's Valve's walkthrough of the process.
Valve notes that while it's technically possible to import existing demos into the replay system, that is not yet supported.
Industrious directors who get cracking with the tools stand a chance at taking home a Saxxy, "the most prestigious virtual award in combat filmmaking: a foot-high bust of an almost entirely naked Australian man." Knowing Valve, it's a threat they may very well carry out.
Saxxy Awards are up for grabs in 20 categories, including 'Best Cinematography' and 'Best Mid-air Murder.' You have until 11:59:59 PM GMT on May 19 to make and submit your film.
The Replay update also adds new achievements and hats, one of which can be earned by getting 1,000 views on a TF2 video uploaded to Youtube.
