Sony Online Entertainment pulled due to intrusion

Sony Online Entertainment has pulled its service, saying that it "discovered an issue that warrants enough concern for us to take the service down effective immediately."

Strange news got a little bit stranger today, as Sony Online Entertainment has pulled its service due to a new revelation during the course of its investigation into the PlayStation Network data theft. SOE services seem to be down, and the official site (via GamePolitics) updated this morning with the following message:

We have had to take the SOE service down temporarily. In the course of our investigation into the intrusion into our systems we have discovered an issue that warrants enough concern for us to take the service down effective immediately. We will provide an update later today (Monday).

What makes this particularly odd is that until today, Sony has claimed that SOE servers were safe, thanks to keeping its services and databases separate from those of PlayStation Network. Now it sounds like SOE databases may have been compromised as well, but Sony may just be erring on the side of caution.

The company was already planning to compensate players of PlayStation 3 MMOs like DC Universe Online and Free Realms for the inconvenience of the outage. The company has also outlined its appreciation program for PSN users.

Probably. When my CC number got compromised they went for itunes as well. I think they buy apps which are either their own, just for the money, or they are paid to try and get apps to the top of the list, or some shenanigans like that.

They may not be real iTunes purchases, many scammers just use a description that looks like iTunes. Call your card and refuse the charges, don't bother with Apple.

"Sony Online Entertainment pulled due to intrusion"

Excuse me, where does it say this??? The Sony quote in the article only seems to indicate that they found a weakness of some kind, not that there was an intrusion.

That can be read as "during the PSN investigation, we also found a vulnerability in the SOE system, so are doing preventative maintenance on it"

this is what I would bank on. they brought in a 3rd-party for a full security audit. no doubt they've been testing everything they have.

So I guess next week Sony is going to tell everyone with an SOE account, that all their info was stolen. They need to just come out and say we got hacked and your info might have been compromised.

"The company did tell us that this was not a separate attack, and that service going down was "related to the ongoing investigation of the external intrusion that occurred in April." Keep trolling people... It's obvious they are going through all their networks and fixing the original problems... It's the same intrusion as the first one, deep breaths everyone... now stop typing your crying..
